* Upon the death of a Salamander, if the body is not returned to Nocturne and ritually burned in the Pyreum under Mount Deathfire, his brothers may elect to cremate the body locally during or after a campaign. In such a situation, as the fallen Fireborn burns, his fellow Salamanders thrust their arms into the flames of the pyre. As a very personal ritual, singular touches may be added to the ceremony. In some cases a Lament may be sung, or the comrades of the fallen may offer a few words of wisdom or remembrance. The ritual is conducted individually in the case of the fallen, with each of the slain having their own pyre, attended by his squad and closest brothers.27c

Though the Salamanders can fight in any theatre under any conditions, they have a special proclivity towards close combat through the use of Flame Weapons and Melta Weapons.58b In the time of the Great Crusade, they also made great use of Volkite Weaponry.61 The individual technical aptitude of Salamanders, thanks to the Promethean Cult espoused by Vulkan, allows them to maintain complicated weapons and machinery in the field.61
The Salamanders are fond of deploying mass heavy armour alongside fire-wielding heavy infantry, making a methodical advance that annihilates the enemy with incendiaries and heavy firepower. Their skills also have proven able to translate into being extremely effective in defence and boarding actions.39 In battle, the Salamanders are known to be incredibly patient and will wait until the enemy is in range of their flame weaponry before unleashing their fire.58b
The Salamanders maintain unusually large amounts of Terminator Armour, which can only be maintained by the skill of a chapter known to be artisans.58b
