The Dweller Beneath
| |||
The Dweller Beneath was the first of several connected battles to take place on the planet Karis Cephalon between Inquisitor Lichtenstein and Witch Hunter Tyrus, each attempting to foil the others plans. Lichtenstein would ultimately prove victorious, leading to the events of The Paraelix Configuration.[1][2]
Prelude to the Battle
M26 (approximate)
15,000 years prior to M41, on the planet Karis Cephalon the sleeping Daemon Prince Pharaa'gueotla was bound to the bedrock of the world, stripped of its power and bound in chains of finest silver and oaths of unspeakable power. It had been imprisoned there by a mortal - a bright-haloed warrior of awesome power, so far as the Daemon Prince's hazy and inconsistent memories could recall.[1]
M41
Dreaming of hatred and vengeance, Pharaa'gueotla would be awoken from its slumber, drawn to the surface by the pull of one who would summon it and offer it freedom.[1]
Elsewhere, Inquisitor Lichtenstein was following clues contained in the scrolls of the heretic monk Corteswain, which would lead him to the world of Karis Cephalon. Joined by Magos Dimitri, they would search for the lost Librarium Hereticus, a thrice damned collection of forbidden tomes and blasphemous techno-arcana. The scrolls hinted at the existence of a Daemon Prince named Pharaa'gueotla, whose essence was bound within a strata of rock and buried deep beneath the surface of a planet the monk described as 'Cursed to be the world where The Things Which Must Not Be Named will visit a thousand times a thousand woes'. Lichtenstein believed Karis Cephalon to be that world. Pharaa'gueotla was said to know secrets that could help locate the Librarium Hereticus, and when Lichtenstein heard that the mine workings at Taberna Ostium had been abandoned by its workers who claimed it was haunted, he instinctively knew that they had discovered the slumbering Daemon Prince. The Inquisitor and the Magos set off for the abandoned mine with Gyrx, a cybernetically altered servitor-warrior created by Dimitri, and Ghaustos, a Daemonhost of Lichtenstein's which would be used to communicate with the Daemon Prince - sorting its lies from the truth.[1]
Meanwhile, the Emperor's Tarot would guide Witch Hunter Tyrus to Karis Cephalon. The Witch Hunter had been guided by the cards for many decades now, hunting the unclean, and now pointed to a meeting with an old adversary. The very same rumours that led Lichtenstein to Taberna Ostium reached Tyrus. The witch hunter would set off with his retinue, including Devotee Malicant, Gland Warrior Sergeant Stone and Enforcer Barbaretta with her Cyber-Mastiff. Arriving to the forge-mine, Tyrus split his warband into two groups, and began to search for Lichtenstein, hoping to capture him alive preferably, or dead if not.[1]

Trivia
The Dweller Beneath was a battle-report featured in White Dwarf 257 (UK), showcasing the then recently released Inquisitor (game). Rather than use one of the ready-game scenarios in the rulebook, Graham McNeill would write up the scenario and serve as its Gamemaster, with Phill Kelly playing Lichtenstein's team while Rowland Cox would play Tyrus team. Atypical for usual White Dwarf battle reports, it was written in a primarily narrative style format, rather than a turn-by-turn analysis.[1]
