Tower of Serenity
The Tower of Serenity (also known as the Ivil'kuuh) was a pre-Imperial archive and library on the planet Zoah.[1]
Overview
The tower was a spire-shaped structure large enough to pierce the clouds that lay near the centre of Zoah's capital city. It was constructed out of an igneous blue stone imported from the planet's easternmost continent and was considered by the native Zoahns to be a wonder of their world.[1]
The Imperial name for the tower was a translation of the Zoahn name for the structure. It was noted to be an inexact translation, however, as the Zoahn concept of "serenity" was closer to the idea of noblesse oblige than it was to peaceful enlightenment.[1]
History
During the Great Crusade, Zoah resisted being brought into the expanding Imperium. As a result, the 3,283rd Expeditionary Fleet was assembled to enforce compliance on the world, in an action which came to be known as the Devastation of Zoah.[1]
At the end of the campaign, the commanders of the Expedition, the primarchs Konrad Curze and Magnus the Red, disagreed violently over the fate of the Tower. This was primarily due to the fact the library contained an extensive repository of lore related to the Warp. Curze wanted to destroy the Tower in accordance with Imperial law, whereas Magnus wished to preserve the library's contents and have them transported to Prospero for study. In the end, Curze ordered his flagship, the Nightfall, to destroy the Tower from orbit and gave Magnus an ultimatum: he would withdraw his Legion from the Tower or they would be killed. Magnus relented and had his Thousand Sons stand down and retreat from the blast zone, but vowed to never forget this slight.[1]
