The Questoris Familia[1a] (also known as Knight Houses, Knightly Houses, or Knight Households) are noble families that operate Knight suits.

History

Dark Age of Technology

  • The Throne Mechanicum and first Knight suits were developed during the Dark Age of Technology, the latter of which was originally designed for industrial purposes.[2][2005a]
  • The first Knight suit pilots consisted of favoured Enginseers and skilled Pilots that were very loyal to the Martian Mechannicum.[100b] These first pilots went on to form House Taranis, the first Knight House. [2]
  • The blueprints for the Knight suit and Throne Mechanicum were included in the STCs that were equipped on the ships for the Long March.[2] The blueprints for the Throne Mechanicum were upgraded to include mind-altering subliminal stimuli to help prepare future users of the Throne for the responsibility of protecting others.[2] These stimuli reinforced virtues such as duty, fealty, honour and nobility.[100a]
  • Thrones Mechanicum used by House Taranis do not possess the mind-altering technology that other Knight Houses do.[2]
  • Upon landing on a suitable planet, the ships used on the Long March were disassembled and used to construct large fortresses, with the Sanctuary being one of the first buildings to be made.[100c] These castles were made of ferrocrete and adamantium, and be protected by Void Shields and would come to house the Knight Houses.[100c]
  • On these worlds, which would come to be known as Knight Worlds, those who could pilot the Knight suits were able to protect the general population from threats such as carnosaurs and hostile Xenos. Due to their status as champions of the people and the virtues instilled by their Thrones, these protectors often became leaders and nobility, forming the ruling noble Knight Houses.[100d]

Questor Traitoris

  • Chaos Knights (Questor Traitoris)
    • Iconoclast Houses which have their roots in the Horus Heresy and originally consisted of Nobles who had been driven mad by their Throne Mechanicum. They are defined by their malice and madness and in place of honor they pursue only conquest. Many have long history's stretching back thousands of years.[18c] These Houses often ally with Chaos Space Marines or declare fealty to only the Dark Gods themselves.[18b]
    • Infernal Houses are sworn to the Dark Mechanicum and maintain themselves on their Daemonic Forge Worlds. The Dark Tech-Priests on these Worlds corrupt captured machinery, using base Human slaves as test subjects and often having them compete with one another for the right to pilot a Daemonic Knight. The Knights of Infernal Households are corrupted beyond repair.[118b]

Blackshield Knight Household[999]

Drovers are a sub-class of Knights that acted as herdsmen for the warrior nobility.[3a] Like Armiger Pattern Knights, which use a Helm Mechanicum, the Knight Suits utilized by the Drovers do not use a Throne Mechanicum.[3b] Additionally, it was illegal for these slow, lumbering suits to be equipped with weaponry, making them reliant on the nobility for protection.[3b]

Household Rating

The Household Grade is a rating used to classify the size of a Knight House by the number of operational Knights. House Vyronii was given the Household Rating of "Primus Belicosa", a rating denoting the high number of knights the house was able to field, when the estimate of fieldable knights was "500 or so". When a further audit was conducted the number was placed at "roughly 600", making it the largest Knight House known to be operating along the Eastern Fringe.[19] Within months of beginning a supply relationship with agents of Warmaster Horus, House Makabius, a Secundus Grade household, swelled to "nearly 200 fully equipped Knights".[20a] At the outbreak of the Horus Heresy, House Orhlacc was believed to possess as many as 300 knights, placing it at the "higher end" of the Secundus rating.[20b] The Sons of Horus falsely claimed that House Ærthegn, a Tertius Grade household, had "around 100 Knight armours" which placed it "among the smaller Knight Households incorporated into the Imperium". It was later revealed that the true number was closer to 300, which rivalled some of the oldest Knight Households.[20c] House Taranis was considered the strongest of the Knight Houses, with 600 Knights, and held the Grade of "Primus (Maximus)".[21a] House Coldshroud, a Primus Grade household, possessed 389 knights at the outbreak of the Horus Heresy.[21b] House Terryn, a Primus Grade household, was capable of field "almost 300 knights".[21c] House Procon Vi, a Primus Grade household, was considered better categorized as two Secundus Grade houses. While possessing 447 knights, they were often fielded as two separate groups, with one of them containing roughly 215 knights.[21d] House Col’Khak, a Secundus Grade household, boasted a strength of 254 knights, even after the losses at Isstvan V.[21e] House Krast, a Primus Grade household, possessed 400 knights at the outbreak of the Horus Heresy.[21f] House Moritain, a Tertius Grade household, possessed 125 knights two decades before the Horus Heresy.[21g] House Zavora, a Secundus (Maxis) Grade household, was known to be at the higher end of its Grade strength. It possessed 383 operational knights with an additional 100 in storage due to a lack of scions.[21h]
