Overview
Xenophon is a world of tempestuous oceans, countless small islands lined with white-sand beaches, and twisting macro-orchards producing exotic fruits. First encountered during the Macharian Crusade, it quickly became a rest world for victorious troops. The natives welcomed the Imperium with apparent eagerness, though beneath this façade lay hidden cults and darker loyalties.[1]
History
Discovered late in the second year of the Crusade, Xenophon offered shore leave to those soldiers who had pleased Lord Solar Macharius or his generals. Visitors were warned of the hazards of the seas, but many fell victim to hidden undertows, coral reefs, or venomous fauna. Imperial authorities dismissed tales of strange tidal songs as harmless natural phenomena, a grave mistake, for these sounds concealed the influence of the Drukhari.[1]
The Drukhari had preyed upon Xenophon long before the Imperium’s arrival, cultivating secret cults amongst its people. During the Noctis Aeterna, the veil weakened further, and the population once again offered sacrifices to their xenos patrons to ensure survival.[1]
Government and Organisation
Xenophon is ruled by the hereditary Xosk dynasty, Planetary Governors since the Crusade. Unlike many worlds, Xenophon has not been ravaged by industrial exploitation; the Xosks deliver tithes without destroying their planet’s natural beauty. This has made Xenophon an unusual but tolerated exception within the Imperium.[1]
The Administratum maintains only light oversight, deeming the Xosk capable rulers who require little supervision beyond tithe records. The Adeptus Mechanicus presence is minimal, focused on monitoring crop yields while quietly pondering the Omnissiah’s purpose for such a world.[1]
Many injured veterans of the Astra Militarum unfit for front-line service are stationed here, training new recruits or working alongside the Ecclesiarchy and Schola Progenium. Over time, the Imperial Cult has become deeply entrenched, raising a zealous workforce to meet the demands of the Imperium.[1]
Culture and Religion
The people of Xenophon outwardly appear gracious, pious, and eager to please Imperial visitors. Yet beneath this hospitality lies a darker devotion. Huge cults venerate entities they call the Pearl Eyed Ones, the Tide Masters, and the Coral Lords. These beings are believed to dwell beneath the waves, demanding sacrifices to ensure the world’s safety.[1]
The cultists are adept at misdirection, explaining away disappearances as accidents of the perilous seas. Occasionally, the mutilated corpses of the sacrificed are returned by their patrons to sustain the illusion. Without such deception, the constant vanishing of citizens and visitors alike would long ago have drawn the wrath of the Inquisition.[1]
Xenos Threats
Xenophon is stalked by the Drukhari, who maintain hidden webway portals beneath its coral reefs. In collusion with the native cults, they claim victims in exchange for sparing the wider population.[1]
The Kabal of Blithe Torment, led by Archon Jasequel, currently holds sway. Cloaked in trophies taken from the finest officers of the Macharian Sector, Jasequel delights in clandestine raids and ritualised slaughter. Though satisfied with secrecy for now, his hunger for victims grows with every passing year.[1]
Notable Figures
- Aemiliana Xosk – Current head of the Xosk dynasty and Planetary Governor of Xenophon. Unlike many of her peers, she is highly visible and approachable, frequently visiting macro-orchards and praying alongside workers. She has commissioned more than seventy shrines and cathedrals across the planet, demonstrating her devotion to the God-Emperor.[1]
- Archon Jasequel – Master of the Kabal of Blithe Torment, who oversees the sacrifice and raiding of Xenophon. His cloak is said to be fashioned from the remains of Macharian officers, and his cruel hunger drives ever greater acts of depravity.[1]
