Zagrus was a Hykanatoi in the Legio Custodes' Hetaeron Companions, who took part in the Horus Heresy's Siege of Terra.[1a]

History

A proven exemplar of the Custodes' excellence,[2] he was among the one hundred Hetaeron Companions[1e] that Caecaltus Dusk commanded as the Emperor led a Teleportation attack on Warmaster Horus' flagship, the Vengeful Spirit. But due to Horus' machinations, the strike force's teleportation separated them all and the Emperor and the Companions found themselves alone within one of the Spirit's hanger bays.[1b] Soon afterwards, though, the Warmaster was able to manipulate the Companions' minds and convinced them that the Emperor had to die. With this overwhelming thought, the Companions attacked the Emperor and He was forced to kill many of them, before He could gather enough of His psychic might to clear the Custodes' minds of Horus' influence.[1c] The Companions had been left ravaged, however, and few were still alive to protect the Emperor, as He ventured further into the Vengeful Spirit.[1d]

Their respite was short lived though, as the Chaos Gods then struck and clouded the Companions' minds to the environment around them. This allowed the Daemons infesting the warp-tainted Vengeful Spirit to silently attack the Custodes and many were killed this way, before the Emperor noticed what was happening. Once more He was forced to use his psychic powers to clear the Companions' minds, but at this point only Zagrus, Caecaltus Dusk, Xadophus, Karedo, Ravengast, Nmembo and Taurid still lived.[1e] As they ventured further into the Vengueful Spirit they began to be attacked on all sides and the Emperor extended his psychic might into the surviving Companions. Though their minds were still their own, the Custodes' become an extension of the Emperor's will and their eight bodies were controlled by His mind, as He searched for Warmaster Horus.[2]
