This is the most basic proposal of how I see the information flow of the lex. Are there any categories we treat differently and are missing? Any other ways we handle things? Discuss! --Zap1000x (talk) 21:41, 3 April 2026 (UTC)

  • I still worry about the distinction between Hobbyist and Staff content in White Dwarf specifically. How does this affect Guest writers who may not be staff? Some who only have their names we might find out are staff from linked in rather than any GW publication. Some staff stuff will be mistaken as hobbyist and (less likely) vis versa. Also how do we define staff? Does a Mail Order Troll or a weekend casual Red Shirt have the same weight as Andy Chambers? If not, where is the cut off. What about articles like, for example White Dwarf 247 (AU) where the Red Shirts play a game against the WD writing staff. Is their lore less value while being in an article with lore of higher value? Would that change where its a Hobbyist vs a Staff writer and they both put lore? (That definently happens in one of the WD Australia, just not sure number off of the top of my head). Personally I feel if its in WD, Codex, or Main Website, and the place of publication doesn't mention it is hobbyist created then it should be treated at the same value? There's going to be a LOT of re-writing on Medusa V and Armageddon stuff otherwise. A lot of forces from there are Hobbyist in nature, but published offically. Some are staff, but you would only know that if that staff member happened to write about it elsewhere (as especially with Medusa V the content isnt labelled as to who created it). For example the Krieg 76th appear first on the Medusa V website as unattributed. So no idea if Staff or not. Its only because I personally happened to find them while archiving all WD Australias that we now know that they are Staff made. Had Bryan Cook not written an article six years later about his dudes in WD Australia (never showing up in UK or US) then we would not know he made the force, and it would be considered hobbyist, despite being staff.
  • Hobbyist content, especially posted on just a local GW page is often really porr quality (the images, not the work itself which is often stellar). Where other images are avaliable I feel it should be avoided at all costs, and only used if literally no other images exist. To me the poor quality of some of those images degrades the reliability of the Lex (or the perception of it)

Note on Uncertain Sources

If any Editor is not sure if he/she is allowed to use a specific source, please submit your request here, thank you. Any resolved status question will be subsequently included in the list above (if it is not already there).

Accepted Sources

Sources published by Games Workshop or a subsidiary or license holders without fan-submitted content.

Examples of Accepted Sources

The following list is non-exhaustive:

Note on Hobbyist Miniature Images

Accepted sources (including but not limited to White Dwarf Magazine, Games Workshop websites, and Games Day events handouts) will on occasion feature models and conversions from creators other than Games Workshop staff (e.g. Golden Demon winners), which should be treated with additional care by Editors using the following steps:

  1. Create a ==Hobbyist Miniature== section with the {{HobbyistContent}} disclaimer and an image gallery; and/or add the appropriate image to the gallery.
  2. Note all included information on their origin and authorship clearly in a Trivia section below.

Hobbyist Miniature sections are exclusively excepted to draw from an additional source:

  • public social media pages for Games Workshop retail stores with images of relevant models where no other images of those models exist.

Sources Requiring Disclaimers

Sources published by Games Workshop or a subsidiary or license holders with fan-submitted content. These source may only be included if the appropriate disclaimers are included in their article – either in the header if they are the sole subject of the article, or in the Sources section annotated with the appropriate End disclaimer if information drawn from them is cited in another article. In all cases, all included information on their origin and authorship should be noted clearly in a Trivia section below.

The following list is exhaustive:

  1. Fanatic Press Publications: (Template:Fanatic;Template:Fanatic End)
    1. The Citadel Journal
    2. Fanatic Magazine and Fanatic Magazine Online
    3. Gorkamorka Gubbinz
    4. Planet Killer and Battlefleet Gothic Magazine

  2. Warhammer Visions (Template:WHVisions; Template:WHVisionsEnd)
  3. Inquisitor Magazine (Template:InquisitorMagazine; Template:InquisitorMagazineEnd)

Unacceptable Sources

Examples of Unacceptable Sources

The following list is non-exhaustive:

  • leaked, pirated, stolen or otherwise illegally obtained copies of official publications (including legally obtained publications before the official release date as publishing these early constitutes a violation of non-disclosure agreements)
  • other Lexicanum articles (yes, you read that right, only first-hand material can be used as an accepted source)
  • other wikis
  • forums, blogs, message boards, mailing lists etc. (with the possible exception of individuals posting in an official capacity, see "grey areas" below)
  • fan-made content or fanzines

Note on Grey Areas

Specific Unacceptable Sources provide unique and extraordinary insight into Warhammer 40,000 and its development may be added to Trivia sections of articles on a case-by-case basis. Such cases must be submitted and discussed here.

The following list is non-exhaustive:

  • private social media accounts, homepages, blogs, forum posts, Patreons, interviews with third parties etc. by authors, artists or other individuals working for Games Workshop, its subsidiaries or license holders
  • images of competition (including Golden Demon) entries from sources other than Games Workshop.
