The 4th Company of the Ultramarines, known as the Defenders of Ultramar, are some of the most resolute and determined of the chapter.[1]

Overview

The 4th Company's battle record reflects some crushing blows suffered over the course of the millennia, yet it also shows countless victories and a strength of spirit. They are tasked with defending the realm of Ultramar from the myriad threats that face it. These include Tyranids, Daemons, Chaos Space Marines, and Tau. In particular, the battles of the 4th against Hive Fleet Leviathan alongside the Deathwatch and Inquisitor Kryptman in the Battle of Tarsis Ultra are the stuff of legend. The 4th is known to often utilize aggressive and fast-moving tactics despite the fact that their missions are usually defensive in nature. The Company's Battle-Brothers garrison the major fortifications throughout Ultramar and command Ultramar Auxilia forces. To this end, they can often be seen utilizing Fire Support Squads, Thunderfire Cannons, Vindicators, and the like. They rely on armoured transports and gunships to rapidly relocate their gun-lines when the foe attempts to flank their strongpoints. Since the return of Roboute Guilliman, the 4th has been further charged with overseeing the reclamation of wider Ultramar as the realm has again expanded to five hundred worlds. In this role they go to war against rebels or rogue Governors.[1]

History

During the Battle of Tarsis Ultra, the 4th Company fought alongside Inquisitor Kryptman and the Deathwatch to slay the Norn Queen. Despite heavy casualties, the Ultramarines were able to administer a bio-toxin to the Queen, killing it and severely weakening the Hive Mind's control over the Tyranid troops. However, the 4th Company used unorthodox tactics during that operation that contradicted the Codex Astartes, which led to their censure.
