An'ggrath the Unbound, the Guardian of the Throne of Skulls, Most Favoured of Khorne, Lord of Bloodthirsters and the Deathbringer[1] is one of[3] the mightiest Bloodthirsters yet summoned from the warp, and Khorne's most favoured servant. His name is only whispered among the Inquisitors of the Ordo Malleus and the ranks of the Grey Knights, for it invokes dread in even the greatest of the Emperor's heroes.[1]

Overview

An'ggrath is one of the eight most powerful Exalted Bloodthirsters,[3] and he was created by Khorne after the betrayal of the Chaos God's once-favoured champion Skarbrand. Khorne made An'ggrath to be the ultimate expression of war and destruction and he is greater than Skarbrand in almost every respect. Despite this, the two Bloodthirsters have a furious rivalry and hatred of one another. But Khorne has decreed that the old and the new champions will never face each other in combat, as the sheer volume of bloody tributes that they both inflict in his name are far too valuable to lose.[1]

In battle, An'ggrath wields a whip along with a black Daemon Axe, that has been blessed by Khorne. The weapon contains the imprisoned essence of another Bloodthirster, who adds his strength to the Axe's blows. An'ggrath also wears richly decorated black and red armour, which covers his crimson fur that eternally drips with the blood of those slain by the Exalted Bloodthirster. He commands a sizable army, led by Daemon Princes pledged to An'ggrath, and has a sizable domain within the Eye of Terror as well. It contains numerous worlds, including a dozen Hell Forges.[5a]

Appearances

Shortly before the Horus Heresy, An'ggrath was encountered in the Eye of Terror by Lorgar, Primarch of the Word Bearers. To prove his dedication to Chaos, Lorgar defeated An'ggrath in single combat.[2]

In the past 10,000 years, An'ggrath has only been summoned forth from the warp on two occasions. Those that attempt to summon him must have first pleased Khorne with their devotion and slaughter. Few would dare attempt it. Those that do attempt to summon An'ggrath risk Khorne's displeasure and wrath. Both successful summonings have resulted in terrible destruction to the Imperium. Worlds have fallen beneath An'ggrath's cloven hooves before the Grey Knights were able to stop his rampage.[1]

The second and most recent summoning of An'ggrath was the result of a coalition of daemomancers during the latter stages of the Siege of Vraks.[1] While Lord Zhufor of the Skulltakers warband had been blessed by Khorne with the true name of the daemon he did not have the resources to summon An'ggrath; thus he entered into alliance with the daemomancers of The Sanctified in order to summon the greater daemon.[1]

An'ggrath the Unbound[4]

Though An'ggrath was eventually summoned at the height of the Vraks campaign, he was defeated by a force of Grey Knights led by Inquisitor Lord Hector Rex who banished him in personal combat with the artifact-sword Arias.[1]

In late M41, An'ggrath entered into an alliance with the Lord of Change known as the Great Inventor. The servant of Tzeentch sought to unite their Chaos Gods' forces, in order to destroy the Emperor and the Imperium. Once that was done, the Great Inventor would then use their might against the Chaos Gods Slaanesh and Nurgle as well. However the alliance between the two Greater Daemons was discovered by a Keeper of Secrets, who knew this would be a threat against its master, Slaanesh. This led the Keeper to manipulate the Fallen Angel Abdaziel Magron into breaking it apart. The key to this, was that the Great Inventor's plans to destroy their foes, required the Exalted Bloodthirster to have patience and be willing to wait until the plans came to fruition. The Lord of Change explained this to An'ggrath, during a meeting between their forces, and Magron overheard this. Sensing that the Exalted Bloodthirster and his servants were wary of having to have "patience", instead of spilling blood, the Fallen Angel yelled out, "Blood for the Blood God" as loud as he could. This was then taken up by An'ggrath's forces and they soon began attacking their Tzeentch allies. Even the Exalted Bloodthirster took up the cry and attacked the Great Inventor, while cursing the Lord of Change's need for grand schemes and bloodless patience. This battle engulfed their forces and not only ended the Greater Daemons' alliance, but also began another war between their Chaos Gods as well.[5b]
