The Dorean 19th was once an Imperial Guard Regiment before turning traitor while deployed on the planet of Visage.[1a]
Overview
The Dorean 19th were veterans of numerous battles spanning dozens of worlds prior to setting foot on the forsaken world of Visage. Within the first month they learned the war on this world would consist of lightning raids in dense bogs, mercurial Naval support and supplies that disappeared for months or a year with hardly a moment's notice, and combat against the forces of Chaos. All this culminated in a high cost of human life, despite both Doreans priding themselves on weathering such trials.[1a]
The regiment eventually became disillusioned by the Imperium and defected on Visage. The exact events leading to their betrayal aren't specified, but the catalyst involved the burning of a young mother and her baby[1b] at the hands of the world's prominent Confessor, Javard Libertinum. The 19th fled into the local backwaters and wilderness, with Colonel Oire leading a guerilla war against the local Imperial forces in junction with the local bog cult's sorcerers and cultists. Years after their betrayal the Cadian 900th were assigned to combat the traitor guard and local heretic uprising amassing on the world. In the latter six months of the conflict the two armies went toe-to-toe. The local marsh cult and their numerous local psykers working with the traitor guard forces, both faction were using each other for their temporarily aligned goal of fighting back against the Imperium, despite the former Imperial soldiers despising the bog cult and their dark religion with extreme disdain.[1c]
By the time of the final climatic battle of the war, the Dorean 9th had four companies of mostly Guard veterans that were supplemented with those locals trained over the decade spent on the world. The 900th and 19th finally met in their first head-on battle and final all-out conflict as the daemon known as the Witchbringer emerged from its alien prison. This is where the divergent goals of the Dorean Colonel and the bog cult were revealed. While the marsh priests wished to see the Cadian's Primaris psyker Glavia Aerand be possessed by the deamon so it could rule the proliferating Chaos-worshipping psykers of the world as a god-king, Colonel Oire wished to see it all destroyed. Hating all gods and their meddlesome nature to use mortals lives for their wars, the Colonel ordered an all-out assault with the sole goal of killing the primaris psyker. This world leave the bestial daemon without a powerful enough host to inhabit and force it into an blind rage like a severely wounded animal, thus destroying all life on the planet, but all be trapped alone on the world with no mortal souls left to consume and empower it. The goal was to leave nothing for gods of darkness or light to fight over with their mortal pawns' wars of escalation over. The traitors and cultist irregulars would turn on each other in the final charge, dealing a mortal wound to Glavia and nearly succeeding in killing her.[1c]
