Joining the Járnhamar Pack
A young and impetuous warrior, Hafloí was assigned to the Járnhamar pack to bring them back to fighting strength following the death of Grey Hunter Tínd, despite this being highly unorthodox.[1b] As the newest member, he was full of the boisterous energy and arrogance typical of his rank, eager to prove his worth among the veteran Grey Hunters. His introduction to the pack coincided with the return of Ingvar, a former member who had been serving with the Deathwatch for over fifty years. Hafloí's youthful impetuousness was immediately apparent when he challenged the newly-returned Ingvar about his right to carry the blade Dausvjer.[1c] While often chided by his new brothers, particularly the old warrior Jorundur, his raw fighting spirit was undeniable.[1d]
Ras Shakeh
Hafloí's first major off-world engagement with Járnhamar was on the blighted Shrine World of Ras Shakeh. Aboard the plague ship they assaulted in orbit, he threw himself into combat with reckless abandon, getting his helm cracked and suffering from toxin exposure before being helped by Ingvar.[1e]
After the destruction of their transport, the pack assisted the local Adepta Sororitas forces of the Order of the Wounded Heart against a massive plague-cultist uprising. During a raid on a column of enemy chem-tankers, Hafloí grew concerned with his pack-brother Baldr's berserk fighting style and broke off to attack a tanker on his own. He then encountered a powerful Plague Marine sorcerer. In his youthful eagerness, he charged the creature and was quickly overwhelmed by its foul warp-magick. Powerless and aged by the sorcery, Hafloí was saved by the intervention of Baldr, who revealed his own nascent psychic gifts to defeat the witch. The sorcerous energies unleashed during the fight permanently bleached Hafloí's armour bone-white. This humbling and near-death experience was a turning point, stripping him of much of his youthful arrogance.[1f]
During the final siege of Hjec Aleja, Hafloí, now nicknamed White-pelt by Jorundur, fought with renewed purpose and bravado, his taunts and challenges inspiring the beleaguered mortal defenders on the walls.[1g] When Plague Marines teleported behind their lines, Hafloí and Jorundur jumped down to engage them. Separated from the older warrior, Hafloí single-handedly hunted down and killed a Plague Marine with phenomenal speed and fury, a feat that deeply impressed Jorundur.[1h] At the climax of the battle, it was Hafloí who, against Jorundur's advice, managed to get the heavily damaged Thunderhawk Vuokho airborne. In a final act of defiance, he crashed the gunship into the heart of the enemy vanguard, breaking their assault and paving the way for the defenders' victorious counter-charge.[1i] He then survived the crash and joined his pack for the final push, repelling the assault of the Death Guard.[1j]
After the battle on Ras Shakeh, the Járnhamar pack was reinforced by Njal Stormcaller and his retinue. Hafloí and Olgeir were tasked with a scouting mission in the ruins of Hjec Aleja to assess the remaining enemy presence while the rest of the pack navigated the strained political situation on the planet.[2a] Later, they were sent to investigate a destroyed Ecclesiarchy listening post in a nearby asteroid field, where they fought their way through mutant hordes in zero-gravity to retrieve vital datacores.[2b]
The Hunt for the Festerax
Hafloí took part in the boarding of the Death Guard space hulk, the Festerax. Throughout the brutal fighting in the vessel's corrupted interior, he fought with ferocious energy, attempting to keep pace with his more experienced pack-brothers.[2c] He witnessed Njal Stormcaller defeat a corrupted eldar Wraithknight and was part of the final group of warriors who planted thermal charges in the hulk's enginarium.[2d] During the desperate race to escape the doomed vessel, he was the last to make it to the evacuating assault ram.[2e] In the aftermath, with the pack depleted, Hafloí swore an oath with his surviving brothers to hunt down the agents responsible for the death of their former leader, Hjortur Bloodfang.[2f]
Personality and Traits
Hafloí is depicted as a classic Blood Claw in temperament: hot-blooded, eager for glory, and sometimes reckless. He possesses a fierce loyalty to his pack and a deep-seated desire to prove his worth among his more experienced brethren. Over time, and through the trials he faces on Ras Shakeh, he matures significantly, earning the respect of his pack brothers and proving himself a formidable warrior in his own right.[1g]
