Járnhamar Pack was a squadron of the Blackmanes Great Company of the Space Wolves Chapter.[1a]

The pack was based out of an old, abandoned chamber of the Fang dominated by the carcass of an ancient drekkar.[1d]

History

Ras Shakeh

Originally under the control of the Wolf Guard Hjortur, after he supposedly died at the hands of Orks command fell to Gunnlaugur. Járnhamar Pack received a major shakeup when Ingvar Orm Eversson returned from duty in the Deathwatch. Despite tensions existing between the two former rivals, the pack is dispatched by Ragnar Blackmane to the Shrine World of Ras Shakeh, which is under attack by the forces of Nurgle.[1c] Arriving on a damaged Frigate Undrider, the pack is immediately thrown into heavy combat upon arriving on Ras Shakeh after Gunnlaugur refuses to withdraw at Ingvar's advice. After boarding an enemy vessel in orbit[1e], the pack battles though hordes of Mutants and other horrors before evacuating aboard Thunderhawk as both the enemy Destroyer and Undrider burn up in the atmosphere.[1f]

After landing on Ras Shakeh, the pack rendezvouses with Sisters of Battle of the Order of the Wounded Heart under Canoness Alexis de Chatelaine. Scolded by the Space Wolves over not initiating quarantines and purges of the infected population, the Sisters and Wolves then engage in the bloody business.[1g] The Sisters and Space Wolves continue to battle enemy elements throughout the city-fortress of Hjec Aleja as they prepare their defenses against the incoming larger assault. During the planning, Ingvar and Gunnlaugur nearly come to blows after the Pack Leader orders the former stay behind for a coming raid.[1h] Gunnlaugur launches an expedition out of the city towards an enemy column alongside Olgeir, Baldr, Váltyr, and Hafloi. During the battle, they come to blows with a Chaos Space Marine Sorcerer, who exacerbates Baldr's latent infection.[1i] The Wolves are eventually able to kill the Sorcerer, but Baldr falls into a coma from plague and Hafloi also becomes infected as Gunnlaugur regrets excluding Ingvar.[1j]

After returning Baldr and Hafloi to medical facilities in Hjec Aleja, Gunnlaugur and Ingvar finally engage in a physical battle as their tensions spill over. After the fight is broken up, Gunnlaugur orders Ingvar stay behind and guard Baldr as the main enemy army arrives at Hjec Aleja. As the enemy assault begins, the Imperial defenders are at first able to hold the line but succumb to the massive plague spore clouds spread across the battlefield. The walls are then breached by Plague Marines as the Space Wolves and Sisters battle desperately to hold them back.[1k] Falling back to the Ighala Gate, the Sisters are wiped out by Chaos forces at their cathedral as Gunnlaugur prepares to have the pack make a final stand. Meanwhile Ingvar discovers the dying Sister Bajola, who reveals that Hjortur didn't fall to Orks but rather something called "Fulcrum" and gives the Space Wolf a golden Cherub pendant.[1l] Gunnlaugur, Olgeir, and Jorundur then aid Váltyr against the Chaos Space Marine champion Thorslax the Blighted.[1m]

Thorslax proves too much for the Wolves, who are all swiftly defeated by his power as Valtyr dies. As Gunnlaugur is about to be killed, Baldr appears, crackling with green psychic energy and killing Thorslax. With their champion gone, the enemy assault breaks into disarray as Canoness de Chatelaine leads a small group of surviving Sisters in a counterattack. Hafloi crashes their Thunderhawk into the enemy vanguard, fueling further chaos in their retreat. Ingvar then discovers Baldr, briefly fighting him before he collapses. Gunnlaugur agrees to trust Ingvar as he advises allowing Baldr back into their pack.[1m]

The Stormcaller

Still in the besieged Hjec Aleja, Járnhamar Pack learns of the imminent arrival of reinforcements under Njal Stormcaller. Canoness de Chatelaine plans to launch a breakout to coincide with the arrival of reinforcements.[2a] During the battle, crimson Drop Pods revealed to be from the Sisters of Battle arrive alongside Njal Stormcaller, who launches a devastating psychic assault that drives back a group of Plague Marines. Amongst the reinforcements is Cardinal Giorgias Delvaux, who immediately assumes control of the situation and is disdainful of the Space Wolves.[2b] As the Cardinal consolidates power and condemns de Chatelaine to a Penitent Engine, Njal decides to lead the Wolves on a hunt for the enemy Space Hulk Festerax, which carries something called the Mycelite. After Baldr awakens from his coma without memory of the prior battle, it is agreed that he will accompany the pack on the hunt as well.[2c]

Jorundur, Olgeir, and Hafloi investigate a deep-space asteroid listening station as Ingvar joins the Ecclesiarchy in their purges on Ras Shakeh. Coming across a group of Chapter Serfs led by Torek Bjargborn from the destroyed Undrider, Ingvar learns that the Ecclesiarchy were searching for something on Ras Shakeh before the Space Wolves arrived. Meanwhile, the Wolves aboard the asteroid station confirm the Festerax is heading towards the Hive World of Kefa Primaris.[2c] As the Wolves head to the planet to intercept the Festerax, Olgeir is dispatched ahead in the System Runner Hlaupnir to warn the Planetary Governor. As the Wolves are underway, they learn that Cardinal Delvaux is preparing to launch Virus Torpedoes at Kefa Primaris to purge it of life before the Festerax's arrival.[2d]

Upon arriving at the Festerax, the Wolves immediately launching a boarding assault, battling hordes of Mutants and even a Nurgle-corrupted Wraithknight as Baldr is captured by Mycelite, a powerful Death Guard Sorcerer.[2f] The Wolves under Njal are able to set detonation charges at the core of the Space Hulk as Mycelite attempts to fuse Baldr's powerful psychic consciousness with his Space Hulk.[2g] Meanwhile, Olgeir arrives at Kefa Primaris and warns the Governor of the impending threat, urging evacuation of vital assets.[2e] As Ingvar and Jorundur sabotage the launch of Virus Torpedoes on Vindicatus, Njal is confronts Mycelite and is assailed by hordes of Daemons. Baldr rescues the Rune Priest, breaking free of Mycelites control and killing the Sorcerer.[2h] The Wolves then evacuate back to their vessel Heimdall as the Festerax breaks apart.[2i]

Afterwards, Njal declares that Baldr must be executed due to his display of sorcerey. Ingvar refuses to accept this judgement, and along with Gunnlaugur, Hafloi, Olgeir, Bjargborn, Jorundur, and much of the rescued crew of the Undrider are able to rescue Baldr and escape on the ship Hlaupnir in search of "Fulcrum" mentioned on Ras Shakeh. They forcibly take Cardinal Delvaux's Confessor, Klaive, with them in their search.[2j]

Fugitives

Now aboard the commandeered Pirate vessel Amethyst Suzeraine, Járnhamar Pack discuss their next move in the search for Fulcrum. Using information from stolen records and Kalive, they identify their target as the Mining World of Ojada VII.[3a] As they arrive in orbit over the world, they find an Ecclesiarchy fleet already in battle with Heretic counterparts. Gunnlaugur, Ingvar, Olgeir, and the rejuvenated Baldr all board the Hlaupnir and descend to the surface and land on a rig-city.[3b] Fighting through traitor forces in the Rig-City, they meet aid Imperial Guard forces that are unaware of their renegade status.[3c]

Heading to the command center where they suspect the leader of "Fulcrum" is located, Ingvar and Gunnlaugur find the rogue Cardinal Leon Chirastes, revealed to be the leader of the shadowy organisation and instigator of the anti-Imperial uprising. However the Cardinal has poisoned himself and close to death, but before he passes he reveals that he has held a centuries-long vendetta against the Space Wolves due to the Incursion of Fools and has compiled a list of members of the Chapter marked for death.[3d] Meanwhile in space Klaive is broken out of his cell by the Amethyst Suzeraine's Ecclesiarchy-loyal operations chief, Ejika Suaka. Klaive is launched in an escape pod towards the Ecclesiarchy vessel Immaculate Destiny before Jorundur and Hafloi can stop her.[3c] Reaching the Ecclesiarchy warship, Klaive meets with Cardinal Axith Orquemond and attempts to convince him of the traitorous status of the Space Wolves as Hafloi infiltrates the vessel, sabotages its Lance weaponry, and records the conversation before fleeing in a shuttle.[3e]

Back aboard the Amethyst Suzeraine, Ingvar informs the Pack that Chirastes' next target is a Space Wolf known as Blackmane Thunderfist, though none know who that refers to and assume it refers to Ragnar Blackmane. Knowing that Chirastes personal Regiments with orders to kill the target are deployed near Ragnar in the 13th Black Crusade, they make towards Cadia.[3f] Emerging in the Cadian System, they find a titanic naval battle taking place. The Pack is forced to abandon ship in the Hlaupnir as the Amethyst Suzeraine is destroyed by Chaos forces.[3g] With the aid of an Ultramarines vessel, the Pack is able to land on Cadia itself, guided by Baldr's psychic visions.[3h] They eventually travel to Kasr Vasta, coming across the dying Eldar Warlock Caerlainn. She removes Baldr's null-collar in exchange for the Space Wolf taking her Spirit Stone and return it to her people. With Baldr's psychic nullification gone, he is able to detect Ragnar's precise location in Kasr Vasta.[3i]

Fighting in Kasr Vasta through Chaos Space Marines, Gunnlaugur volunteers to stay behind to aid nearby Cadian Shock Troopers. Jorundur stays behind as well, and in the subsequent battle Gunnlaugur is severely wounded while Jorundur is killed.[3j] Guided by his vision, Baldr bid the groups farwell and disappears into the tunnels beneath the Cadian Fortress. The remainder of the pack is able to finally reach Ragnar's Great Company and evacuate with him off-world after saving him from the plot of Fulcrum.[3j]

In the aftermath, Ingvar, Olgeir, and Hafloi reunite with the badly injured Gunnlaugur along with the remainder of Ragnar's Company aboard the Frigate Dawnrunner. The pack now conists of Gunnlaugur, Ingvar, Olgeir, and Hafloi as they are cleared of any wrongdoings by Ragnar.[3k]
