Kalevala was the second homeworld of the Steel Confessors Space Marine Chapter[1][3], becoming so at some point after the loss of their original homeworld of Kracsis IV to the Tyranids of Hive Fleet Behemoth which had rendered them a fleet based chapter.[2]

History

It was home to their geneseed vaults, as well as an Astropathic choir, to boost the signal of the Astronomican and aid Navigators to manoeuvre around the various Hive Fleets and the Shadow in the Warp in that region of space. The Steel Confessors were honourbound to defend the vast manufactorum of the planet when it would be invaded by Hive Fleet Leviathan.[2]

Most crucially, Kalevala also contained the chapter's Librarium and the stasis tomb of Avonis, the very first Chapter Master of the Steel Confessors, wounded by tyranids during the evacuation of Kracsis IV and believed by the Steel Confessors to one day return when the chapter would need him.[2]

Trivia

  • The Kalevala is a collection of epic poetry. It is regarded as the national epic of Karelia and Finland.
  • The Battle for Kalevala was a large multi-table game event for Games Day 2005 involving numerous players.[1] A recorded outcome of the battle, both in terms of the actual played game or definitively in-universe, has yet to be found. Presuming the battle was a defeat, it may have meant potential the death of the chapter[1][See Sources]. Presuming it was a victory, it may be their homeworld still.
  • In the novel The Voice of Mars, as the Daemon the Sapphire King recites the names of the natives of various Iron Hands and Successor homeworlds, such as Medusans and Raikans, those of Kalevala are referred to as Kalavelans. Whether this is a spelling error or intentional is not clear.[3]
