Karpova
Karpova is a Cadian Shock Troops Captain. Her Regiment is among the Imperial forces that the Ultramarines Lieutenant Varus Castamon, commands in the defense of the vital Sanctus Line world Regium.[1]
History
She is a survivor of her Homeworld Cadia's destruction, as Karpova's Regiment was fighting elsewhere when it occurred. The Captain is driven to fight the Imperium's enemies and among her battles was serving as a rearguard on Cynus IV and aiding in ending the siege on Sestos Prime. Karpova's Regiment is now serving on Regium, which is a cornerstone of the vital Sanctus Line, but being stationed there for so long has made her restless. With the Imperium's foes marching towards Terra, Karpova is angered that her Guardsmen are spending their time moping up Regium's heretic cells, which she feels is beneath them and also a slight against her Regiment.[1]
This finally reached a breaking point for Karpova, when her Regiment was made to provide protection for Regium's Planetary Governor Seroc, in the fortress city of Zarax, as he spoke to the world's important officials. This was after the remnants of a Leviathan Splinter Fleet, entered Regium's System, during the Fourth Tyrannic War, and began casting the Shadow in the Warp. The Psychic backlash wreaked havoc across the world, leading Seroc to meet with the officials to assure them that Lieutenant Castamon had a plan to destroy the Xenos. Karpova knew at that very moment though, that the Lieutenant was discussing this very plan, somewhere else in Zarax, with his high ranking military officers, while the Captain was stuck watching over Seroc. Not being included in Castamon's meeting angered Karpova and she blamed this on the machinations of either Colonel Levizac or Major Lucanus, who denigrated Cadian Regiments. This made her all the more determined to speak with Castamon after Seroc's meeting was over and ask the Lieutenant to allow her Regiment to be stationed somewhere else. Though Sergeant Vollard assured Karpova that their service on Regium was important, but the Captain refused to listen to her fellow Cadian. In her mind, with so many Imperial forces stationed on Regium, her Regiment leaving it would not lessen the world's defenses.[1]
However before Karpova could follow through on this, Imperial Governor Seroc, ended his meeting by stating he would be leaving Zarax for Salamis Hive. And that he would be taking Karpova and her Regiment with him to provide protection for the vital Hive. This immediately infuriated the Captain, but her temper rapidly cooled, as Seroc explained that it was at Lieutenant Castamon's suggestion. This was after the Lieutenant had studied her record and stated Karpova was personally responsible for the successful rearguard action on Cynus IV and her skills as a tactician ended the siege on Sestos Prime. These public comments ended any anger the Captain had and she accepted her orders to follow Seroc to Salamis. Karpova did not realize, however, that Castamon had told Seroc exactly what he needed to say, in order to get her on the Governor's side.[1]
