Warhammer 40,000: Kill Team is a tabletop miniature game set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, pitching small forces of a dozen infantry miniatures against each others.

Gameplay overview

The player takes control of a team of highly trained operatives from a 40k Faction conducting vital and dangerous missions against their rivals. Each mission is set in an environment called a Killzone.[4a]

Various narrative generators allow you to establish your kill team name, background, quirks, base of operations and individual operative names.[4a]

Your operatives can earn experience which give them benefits like battle honours and rare equipment.[4a] During the game, each players alternate the performing of actions for each of their operative.[4b]

History

Warhammer 40,000 4th Edition' Kill Team (2004)

The Warhammer 40,000 4th Edition Rulebook included rules for a variation of Warhammer 40,000 called Kill-team. This version of the game is asymmetrical, with one player controlling an elite squad of warriors while the other controls Brute squads patrolling the area who start out unaware of the Kill-team's presence.[5]

Battle Missions' Kill Team (2010)

The 2010' Battle Missions book featured a short set of rules for playing mirroring forces consisting of 200 points of models, equalizing the gameplay between the opposing players.[7]

Warhammer 40,000: Kill Team (2013)

Warhammer 40,000: Kill Team (Rulebook) was released in 2013 in the form of an ebook only, as a supplement to the 6th Edition of Warhammer 40,000.[8]

Kill Team 2016

The Kill Team 2016 Core Manual featured updated rules and was accompanied by the first starter set for this format. Its tagline was: Brutal close-quarters combat in the 41st Millennium[1]

Kill Team 2018

The Kill Team 2018 Core Manual takes the fundamentals of the 2016' edition – deep squad customisation, narrative progression and development, low model counts – and marries it to updated rules design, bringing in the team behind Warhammer Underworlds: Shadespire to ensure the ruleset is as tight and balanced as possible.[3]

Kill Team 2019

Kill Team 2021

The Kill Team 2021 Core Book saw the rules reimagined from the ground up: Stealth and positioning are every bit as important as shooting; units’ datacards are changing, showing off what your operatives can do in more detail than before. Front-line troopers can act with comrades, nimble fighters can dodge incoming fire, and powerful soldiers can even perform more actions in a turn than lesser beings; commanders take alternating turns to activate each of their operatives. No longer will one player have to withstand the full fury of their foe’s assault before getting to respond; The kill teams themselves are highly customisable. Each model can be equipped with weapons to match different specialisations within their roster.[4]

Kill Team 2024

The Kill Team 2024 Core Book featured updated rules, as well as new modes of play: Solo & Co-operative Game Mode.[6]
