History
A star-spanning Chapter of noble renown, the Marines Errant were formed during the 23rd Founding from the Eagle Warriors and thus are descended from the gene stock of Roboute Guilliman and the Ultramarines. Like most chapters of the period, they have spent their existence on perpetual crusade against the many foes of mankind. They are one of the few Chapter's known to have crusaded far beyond the edge of Imperial space and returned.[3c]
Notable Campaigns
- Crusade of Spite (early M39): The Chapter operated beyond the borders of the Western Fringes of the galaxy[2c]
- Second Extra-Galactic Expedition[2c]
- Kadyrov Voyage to the Hazeroth Abyss: The Chapter's Battle Barge was the sole survivor of the doomed expedition. This campaign nearly proved the Chapter's undoing and they spent years rebuilding afterwards.[3c]
- Corinthian Crusade (698.M41): the Chapter was part of a combined Space Marine force led by Marneus Calgar, consisting of the Angels of Absolution, Lamenters, Silver Skulls, Scythes of the Emperor, and the Ultramarines. During this seven year crusade the force inflicted a series of major defeats on Waaagh! Skargor and the Ork empire of Charadon, which delayed the invasion of Waaagh! Argluk for thirty years. The Marines Errant were honorably singled out for a series of close-fought boarding actions, as well as for the rescue of the Ultramarines Third Company.[3a]
- The Badab War[9]: in 904.M41, the Marines Errant were recalled from the Eastern Fringe to reinforce the Fire Hawks Chapter. However, they soon found themselves fully occupied protecting Imperial ships in transit.[1] During the war, their Chapter Master Corwin Admatha was killed in a Mantis Warriors trap.[3a] Despite this their Strike Force Star Jackal were Drop Podded during the Bellerophon's Fall.[8]
- The Fall of Vilamus: in the last years of M41, Huron Blackheart of the Red Corsairs set out to steal large amounts of gene-seed. Vilamus, the fortress-monastery of the Marines Errant, became a target due to their relatively small garrison, subsequently losing nearly all of their gene-seed.[2]
Organisation
The Marines Errant follow the tenets of the Codex Astartes, though they have slightly modified it to better accommodate their Fleet-based status. Each of the Chapter's company captains and high officers are also assigned flag command of a particular fleet vessel (most commonly a Cruiser) and are expected to act autonomously for extended periods. Most Marines Errant taskforces are highly independent and equally expected to operate alone for many years. Even recruitment is practiced in this nature, with individual taskforces recruiting new Aspirants as they travel the stars and only returning them to the 10th Company for Scout training when it's practical to do so. The 1st and 10th Companies are nominally based on their flagship Battle Barge but are in practice usually dispersed as needed to individual commands. Because of all this, the Marines Errant were thought to have stood well above the mandated strength of a Chapter in the Codex Astartes before the Fall of Vilamus.[3a]
Due to heavy past losses, the Marines Errant have never been able to replace certain precious equipment. Thus do they carefully ration the distribution of things such as Terminator Armour. Their Techmarines have become adept at maintaining and repairing any wargear they come across. This has even included the incorporation of Xenos technology.[3a]
The Marines Errant are particularly focused around securing their future and preserving their Gene-Seed. Thus does the Chapter maintain an unusually large amount of Apothecaries, who oversaw the Chapter's gene-vault on Vilamus until its plundering.[2a]
Alliances
The Marines Errant signed a pact with the Rogue Trader house under Sia'hadn Ecale in 390.M38. The two powers combined their resources to explore the Ghoul Stars for more then forty years.[3]
The Third Company of the Marines Errant also accompanied the Rogue Trader Milos Baral in his expedition to the sector Prath-Veil.[7]
