Vulkaris was trapped within the Warp, until the creation of the Great Rift caused both it and the Hive World Trollius to materialize within the fringes of the Imperial Gilead System.[1a] These two unsettling additions to the Gilead System have been classified as Membrane Worlds.[1b]

Overview

After the creation of the Great Rift jettisoned Vulkaris from the warp, it entered an irregular orbit of the Gilead System's star. The ellipse brings it close to the Gilead Heartworlds, passing through their orbital trajectories, before swinging back out wide to the very limits of Gilead's gravitational pull.[1c]

When Gilead's Imperial forces explored Vulkaris, they found a frozen world whose surface was dotted with what appeared to be abandoned Imperial shrines. However, they soon discovered that plague and decay covered Vulkaris's surface and it is now quarantined, with landing there forbidden to all.[1a] The atmosphere is breathable, but carries plague on the winds. Former Imperial citizens, risen dead, mutants, Nurglings and other daemons live here. These creatures roam the plagued forests and rotten streets of ruined cities of broken marble and rusted iron. None of these inhabitants control the world; the true rulers of Vulkaris are a small fleet of Death Guard in orbit, ready to make war on more worlds.[1c]

Under normal circumstances, this world of plague and mutant would have already been subject to Exterminatus and the Chaos Astartes combated. If a single disease of the Plague God was unleashed on the fertile fields of Ostia or the dense hives of Gilead Primus, the entire system could collapse from starvation or anarchy. However, the Varonius Flotilla protecting the system doesn't have the resources to take such actions against the plagued planet. Stealthy reconnaissance ships have discovered what appears to be a disease ravaging some of the Dead Guard vessels looming above Vulkaris. Massive hull breaches of swiftly rotting meat, followed by a series of internal explosions have been witnessed before the respective vessel plummets aflame to Vulkaris below. No explanation has been forthcoming; some among the Varonius Flotilla have taken to calling this disease the 'copper blight'. Varonius himself is wary and believes this could be a trap made to lure the Rogue Trader's flotilla into attacking what they perceive as a weakened enemy. For now, he watches and waits.[1b]

Despite being little more than a foetid, disease ridden hellscape, Vulkaris retains life on its surface. Daemons and the faithful of Nurgle cavort openly amongst the rot and ruin. The persistence of mortal life here is seen by some as a 'blessing' of Nurgle. However, the Asuryani of Ul-Khari suspect a relic of their ancestors — perhaps of Isha herself — could be the reason the world retains a fragment of its shattered biosphere.[2]
