Marshal (Black Templars)

(Redirected from Black Templars Marshal)
Targetdrone.gif This article is about the Black Templars rank; for the Imperial Guard rank, see Marshal (Imperial Guard).

A Marshal leads a Black Templars Crusade and is second only to the High Marshal. A marshal can be compared to a company commander although the number of Space Marines under his command can vary.[1b]

Overview

Black Templars Marshal

Black Templars Crusade Fleets are often led by an experienced Marshal – similar in role to the Captains of other Chapters – who oversees the order of battle and commands their troops from the front lines.[9] They are fanatical and experienced warriors who answer only to the High Marshal himself. Since the formation of the Great Rift, difficulty in communication with Chapter command has led many Marshals to effectively lead small autonomous quasi-Chapters.[19b]

Marshals are typically chosen from the Sword Brethren, the Black Templars elite troops, through ritual combat, with the winner receiving the rank upon approval from the High Marshal. Only once was this approval known to be withheld, during the Gervahrt Repeal of M36.[1a] Other Marshals were simply Castellans designated by his Marshal to succeed him should he fall.[19b]

Some Marshals have crusaded so afar afield that they have died never having met their contemporaries. In some rare cases, they have never even met the High Marshal himself. However whenever a momtentous decision must be made, all Marshals who are available are mustered on the Eternal Crusader to take part in a vote. This is usually done when the present High Marshal is killed and a new one must be chosen. Other such meetings had to do with the Chapter's response to the Plague of Unbelief, the opening of the Great Rift, the return of Roboute Guilliman, and rumours of a knightly champion stalking Imperium Nihilus.[19b]
