Blade Sworn Retinue
Blade Sworn Retinues, sometimes known as a Balestrike Band,[6] Viper Squads[3b] or Protectors,[3a] are the detachment of Eldar Corsairs that accompany a Corsair Prince and serve as their bodyguards.[1]
Led by the Prince, the Bladesworn act as their personal bodyguard and consist of their finest warriors,[1] often including Felarchs.[6] Typically, this can include members of either close kinsmen, bridge officers or outcasts whose skills are infamous enough for their master to seek them out and make them swear their service to the Prince. They are normally equipped with jet packs but, if lacking such equipment, they are provided with a dedicated transport.[1]
Kurnathi
Kurnathi are Corsair blademasters, specialist assassins that have learned their bloody trade in the Aspect Warrior Shrines, arenas of Commorragh, or even alongside the Harlequins, who are often chosen to serve among the Blade Sworn retinues, passing their swords down from mentor to student, or sometimes awarded as prizes to the victor of an honourable duel.[5]
Trivia
- The Rogue Trader army book The Book of the Astronomican (1988) included the option to upgrade an Eldritch Raider Serpent Squad to a squadron of hero units known as a Viper Squad (with seemingly no relation to the later Eldar vehicle, the Vyper)[3b] and a mercenary group of bodyguards known as Protectors were available to aid Crangor's Buccaneers.[3a]
