The Catachan CMIII, known as the "Night Shrikes", is a Catachan Jungle Fighters Regiment of the Astra Militarum. Its nickname is taken from the monstrous Catachan Shrike, whose image serves as the CMIII's regimental crest.[1]

History

The Regiment was among the Imperial forces that unsuccessfully defended Lazulai from a Tyranid invasion. As the world began to fall to the Xenos, the Catachan CMIII were being led by Major Wulf Khan and were defending the Cobalt Fortress. It was one of the last remaining ones on the dying world and the CMIII fought beside other Imperial forces stationed there, under the command of General Kvelter. The Catachan Regiment had numbered in the thousands when they made planetfall, but months of warfare against the Tyranids had now left the CMIII with only hundreds of Guardsmen left. The survivors were expected to die fighting the Xenos, but Major Khan inspired them to fight on as if the Emperor Himself was watching them. However when an overwhelming Tyranid force was headed in the Fortress' direction, General Kvelter ordered the Major to undergo a final mission.[1]

Khan was charged with leading a squadron of the CMIII outside of the Cobalt Fortress to recover an asset for the Imperium. While the General did not know what it was exactly, Kvelter was convinced the asset was a weapon that would end the threat of the Tyranids. In order to ensure the Major had the best chance for success, though, the General would draw the Xenos' attention by advancing towards Jasper Fortress. Kvelter would lead all of her surviving personnel in the attack, which included the remainder of the CMIII. The General and Major both knew how this advance would end, but it would at least give Cobalt's Imperial forces a proper final fight. Khan would then salute Kvelter, before leaving to pick her squadron for the mission.[1]
