Lady Haera Helmawr[1c]

Haera Astaria Vorterra Helmawr is the 13th recognized daughter of Gerontius Helmawr, the 137th Lord of Necromunda.[1c]

Biography

Her mother was Gerontius's consort Junos Gileain Ulanti, and some say the only reason he named Haera as one of his heirs was because Junos reminded Gerontius of his own mother. Others claim it was because he recognised Haera's talent for treachery early on and Gerontius thought recognizing her as a heir would keep his other children on their toes.[1e] In any case, this implies she is family to D'onne Ulanti.

This talent first showed before Haera was old enough to leave her nursery chambers. She would manipulate and torture her servants; one of Haera's favourite games was blaming an imagined crime upon a newly arrived nanny or guard. They were then forced to frame one of her other keepers for the offense, lest Haera reveal their "secret".[1e]

It was excellent training for the life she would lead as a claimant to Gerontius's throne, and Haera grew to become a sociopath and backstabbing murderer, even by the grim standards of Necromunda's nobility.[1e]

The dangerous young woman has been trained by the finest blademasters of Hive Primus. She is easily the equal of any noble swordsman and the fabulous wealth of House Helmawr affords her exceptional weapons and wargear. This includes her refractor field-infused carapace armour and Watch-Skulls that protect her while she dispatches foes with her Phase Sword and Power Spear. Her mind, however, is her most fearsome attribute, and she has long used it to exploit her siblings and turn them against each other for her own amusement.[1e]

Succession Crisis

After her father was attacked by an assassin during the Great Rift's Noctis Aeterna, he was left close to death due to the unidentifiable toxins that the assassin's power blade was coated with. In order to save his life, Gerontius was placed in a stasis casket until a cure could be found. Because he named no successor to Necromunda's throne, however, this caused Gerontius's children to begin fighting and scheming against each other to become the Hive World's next ruler.[1a]

Worse still, the Rebel Lady Credo began a world-wide rebellion with several Noble and Clan Houses to overthrow House Helmawr's rule of Necromunda.[1b]

During the mayhem, Haera's cruel and manipulative nature greatly aided her and she later killed six[3] of her surviving siblings after they foolishly attended a family meeting she had called.[1c] Only seven of her siblings refused to do so - Laeila, Tamino, Asan, Orin, Jardan, Jeza, and Zarina - and most have wisely gone into hiding to escape Haera's grasp. Because of this, however, she is now not only the de facto ruler of House Helmawr, but of Necromunda as well.[1d] With her siblings dealt with, Haera is focused on destroying Lady Credo's rebellion.[1c]

Flight From Primus

After Haera's ruthless purging of her own family, she found herself isolated and lacking allies to resist House Aranthus's takeover. Many of her Enforcer battalions had defected to House Aranthus under the influence of the Prophet of Redemption, cutting her off from support through sabotage and assassination. Witnessing the rapid collapse of her house's power, Haera decided to flee to the Dust Wall, where Provost-Marshal Logun Kane commanded a substantial Enforcer force.[4a] Her escape and union with Logun Kane was facilitated by Silberlant Sevos, a whisper merchant from Hive Primus manipulating the database and communications in the Palatine Cluster.[4c]

As Ozostium consolidated power in the Palatine Cluster, Haera's yacht flew southeast toward the Dust Wall.[4b] During the journey across Skyblight's chemical plains, a Grey Waste Walkers war party spotted the ship. A Stormcaller summoned lightning that struck the craft, causing one engine to explode and forcing a crash landing.[4c]

Escaping the Ash Wastes Nomads, she allied with Orrin Grimjarl, who offered to guide Haera to Jardlan and the Deep Rifts in exchange for aid in restoring Jardlan's charter.[4d]

Upon reaching Jardlan, they found it filled with corpses of squats. At the Hall of Ancestors, they encountered Asun'ghar, who claimed to be Haera's sister.[4e] Haera's enforcers fought desperately but were overwhelmed. Haera herself faced severe wounds from her alleged sister's attack until Provost-Marshal Logun Kane appeared, rescuing her and sacrificing himself to ensure her escape through the Deep Rift gate.[4f]

Haera emerged severely injured in the tunnels of Hive Secundus, where she was found by Tamino Degarlos Vermelk Helmawr, her estranged brother. Tamino healed her and together they agreed to target Ozostium and sought hidden powers within Hive Secundus to reclaim their family's legacy.[4g]
