Hull (Inquisitor Lord)

History

Despite being a member of the Ordo, however, Hull believes that the Imperium's war against Xenos will always be an unwinnable and unending conflict. The Inquisitor Lord thinks this was imposed upon Imperials by the Emperor, in order to test their courage, faith and honour. He would explain this to the overconfident Imperial Governor Adrianus Quintex, after the Tyranid's invasion of Ameton Epsilon IV warranted the Ordo Xenos to send Hull to deal with it. Quintex's subsequent glowing description of their efforts to combat the Xenos sounded overconfident to the Inquisitor Lord, as the Tyranids attack on Epsilon was unlike any of their other recorded invasions. This led the Inquisitor Lord to theorize that the Xenos had a different agenda for invading the world, rather than wishing to devour it.[1e]

Hull would arrive at Ameton Epsilon IV's capital, Dôme, with a bodyguard detachment from the Garde Lion Chapter, and called for a meeting with all of the military officials presiding over the world's defense. Once the meeting was done, Hull then isolated himself and went over everything he had learned of the invasion, which included a Genestealer Cult that was aiding the Tyranids. Meanwhile Epsilon's population celebrated as news of his arrival spread, as they thought that the involvement of the Inquisition meant the Tyranids would be quickly defeated. Governor Quintex and the Ultramarines Captain Maximus Epathus did not share this enthusiasm, though, especially as Epathus was all too familiar with the Inquisition's expeditious methods.[1f] However while rumours spread that the Inquisitor Lord was communicating with the Ordo Xenos' inner circle to determine if Epsilon warranted suffering an Exterminatus,[1g] this did not occur when Hull emerged. Instead, the Inquisitor Lord sought to discover why the Tyranids had invaded the world.[1h]

Hull theorized the Xenos were searching for something and charged First Captain Julius with using the Ultramarines to discover what it was. The Inquisitor Lord then made Epsilon IV's Mount Antigonos a priority target to search, as it appeared as if the Tyranids were gathering there in large numbers. With his orders issued, Hull had effectively taken control of Ameton Epsilon IV's defense from Julius,[1h] just as the First Captain had done so to the PDF Field Marshal Wilmer Von Epsilon.[1a] Wilmer had not taken the loss of his power well and repeatedly butt heads with Julius on how to defend his Homeworld.[1b] The conflict reached a breaking point, when the Field Marshal secretly organised the creation of Astra Militarum sniper units, without Julius' authority. These Mutant Hunters, as he named them, would specialize in hunting down the Genestealer Cult's psychic Hybrides, whose deaths' would weaken the Cult's fighting ability. But Wilmer also had tried to ensure that the Mutant Hunters were only under his command and not that of the First Captain.[1c] Julius soon discovered what the Field Marshal had done though, and erupted in a rage against Wilmer's transgression against him. The First Captain then had the Field Marshal arrested, but Imperial Governor Adrianus Quintex intervened and lied on Wilmer's behalf. He convinced Julius that the Field Marshal had created the Mutant Hunter units on his orders and Wilmer was released.[1d] Hull for his part, allowed the Mutant Hunters to continue functioning and praised Wilmer for his foresight in creating the units.[1h]

The Ultramarines dispatched to Mount Antigonos, later confirmed the mountain was infested by Tyranids and that the area also contained heavy psychic activity as well.[1i] All of this evidence, led Inquisitor Lord Hull to determine that a Norn Queen was responsible for the activity on Mount Antigonos. However the Norn was not part of the current invasion, but instead had lain within the mountain since Ameton Epsilon IV's previous Tyranid invasion, two hundred and fifty years ago. Though the Norn Queen was thought to have been killed, when Mount Antigonos collapsed during the battle, the Ordo Xenos' research discovered it was possible for a deceased Norn to remain psychically active. Hull theorized that is what occurred and that the Norn's body served as a psychic beacon, which had drawn the Tyranids to the world once more. Though it was unclear what the Xenos intended to do with the Norn's body, Hull ordered that it be destroyed before they succeeded. Doing so would also extinguish the Norn's psychic beacon and end its threat to Epsilon IV.[1j] But to ensure they were successful in destroying the Norn Queen's body, the Inquisitor Lord entrusted Julius with an anti-psyker Speculum Charge. When the bomb exploded, it would not only put an end to the Norn's psychic beacon, but would also kill any other psychic creatures that were caught in its blast or shock waves.[1l] However Julius and his First Company would remain in reserve with the Speculum Charge, until the Norn's body was found in Mount Antigonos.[1m]

As preparations were underway, though, a squad of PDF Field Marshal Wilmer Von Epsilon's Mutant Hunters spotted the Patriarch of Epsilon's Genestealer Cult. Wilmer issued an order to destroy the Xenos, but this was cancelled by Hull. The Inquisitor Lord wanted the Patriarch captured instead, so it could be studied and he dispatched an Eversor Assassin for the mission. Unfortunately after Wilmer's orders were cancelled, the Field Marshal unofficially sent new ones and tasked the Mutant Hunters squad with killing the Patriarch once more. Neither Wilmer or the Mutant Hunters were aware that Hull wanted it alive and the squad killed the Xenos, just as the Eversor was nearing the Patriarch's location. However by thwarting his mission, the Eversor now considered the Mutant Hunters to be his enemy and the assassin then killed the squadron before leaving.[1k]

Hull ordered the attack on Mount Antigonos shortly afterwards and the Ultramarines Epistolary Antonius successfully located a cave that led to the Norn Queen. Captain Julius and the Chapter's First Company then teleported to its location with the bomb and charged towards the Norn.[1m] They were joined by Inquisitor Lord Hull and his Eversor Assassin,[1n] while the Garde Lion and the rest of the nearby Imperial forces defended the cave's entrance from the waves of Tyranids that began rushing towards it. The First Company and Inquisitor then reached the massive remains of the Norn Queen, but they were confronted by a horde of Tyranids. A cyclopean creature also rose from the Norn Queen's entrails and unleashed its psychic powers upon them as well. Hull used his own psychic might to protect the First Company, but several would be killed by the creature before Julius finally destroyed it. When Tyranids continued to rush to the Norn's defense, however, Julius volunteered to activate the Speculum Charge and ordered the others to retreat from the cave. After they did so, the First Captain activated the bomb which erupted in a massive explosion that ended the Norn Queen's threat and made Julius an Imperial martyr. The Speculum Charge also caused the Tyranid's Synapse creatures to collapse and without their leaders, the Xenos were able to be defeated.[1m]
