Julius (Captain)
Julius was a former Captain of the Ultramarines Chapter's First Company.[1e]
History
He was among the Ultramarines' forces that aided the Macragge System world Ameton Epsilon IV,[1e] after it was invaded by Tyranids for a second time in 853.M41.[1a] However Julius was not part of his[1e] Chapter's initial response to the Xenos' attack, which was led by Captain Maximus Epathus.[1c] When the true extent of the Tyranids' invasion was discovered though, including the appearance of a massive Genestealer Cult, Epathus knew the Imperium's forces defending Epsilon IV would not be enough to save it. Thankfully he was able to[1d] successfully convince the Ultramarines to send additional reinforcements to the world and Captain Julius' First Company was among them.[1e] When the First Captain arrived, though, Julius would take immediate control of Epsilon IV's defense against the Tyranids and their Genestealer Cult allies. He would lead the defense from the world's capital, the Dôme, and also took command of the Imperial forces, fighting there. This put him at odds with the PDF Commander Wilmer Von Epsilon[1f] who had led the Astra Militarum and Epsilon IV's PDF, under the authority given to him by the world's Imperial Governor, Adrianus Quintex,[1b] All of that was taken away with Julius' arrival and the outraged Wilmer was given the lower rank of Field Marshal. Adding to his anger, was that Wilmer believed he still outranked Julius and resented having to take orders from a mere Captain - even one who was a Space Marine. His attitude towards Julius led them to butt heads[1g] several times over the course of the invasion.[1h]
This included the First Captain's initial refusal to send Imperial forces to aid the beleaguered Order of Notre Mère des Souffrances' Adepta Sororitas, who had left the safety of Ameton Epsilon IV's capital, the Dôme. They had done so to protect the remains of their first Commandery, which was lost during the world's previous Tyranid invasion during the Battle of Macragge, and Julius did not want to risk additional lives to save them. Epsilon IV's Imperial Governor, Adrianus Quintex, and Field Marshal Wilmer Von Epsilon both disagreed with this decision, but for different reasons. Quintex stated that the loss of the Adepta Sororitas would cause a crisis amongst the world's population, while Wilmer on the other hand, merely wished to undermine the First Captain's authority. Julius ultimately relented to Quintex, perhaps in response to the Governor's threat to send a report to the Ecclesiarchy about the matter, but he refused to allow any Ultramarines to be a part of the forces that were ultimately sent to aid the Order.[1h] Wilmer's undermining of Julius would later come to a head, when the First Captain discovered the Field Marshal had secretly organised the creation of Astra Militarum sniper units. These Mutant Hunters, as he named them, would specialize in hunting down the Genestealer Cult's psychic Hybrides, whose deaths' would weaken the Cult's fighting ability. But Wilmer also had tried to ensure that the Mutant Hunters were only under his command and not that of the First Captain.[1i]
Julius soon discoverd what the Field Marshal had done though and erupted in a rage against Wilmer Von Epsilon's transgression against him. The First Captain then had the Field Marshal arrested, but Imperial Governor Adrianus Quintex intervened and lied on Wilmer's behalf. He convinced Julius that the Field Marshal had created the Mutant Hunter units on his orders and Wilmer was released. However to ensure that he did not cause another incident, the Governor assigned Wilmer away from the capital, Dôme, so that he would be out of Julius' path.[1j] However the First Captain's reign would end, with the sudden arrival of the Ordo Xenos Lord Inquisitor Hull. The Inquisitor immediately took control of Ameton Epsilon IV's defense and sought to discover why the Tyranids had invaded the world. In his opinion, the Xenos were not acting as they had in previous invasions, as the Tyranids were not attempting to simply overwhelm and consume the world's population. Instead, Hull theorized the Tyranids were searching for something and charged Julius with using the Ultramarines to discover what it was. The Inquisitor then made Epsilon IV's Mount Antigonos a priority target to search, as it appeared as if the Tyranids were gathering there in large numbers.[1k]
The Ultramarines dispatched to Mount Antigonos confirmed this was true and the area contained heavy psychic activity as well.[1l] All of this evidence, led Inquisitor Lord Hull to determine that a Norn Queen was responsible for the activity on Mount Antigonos. However this Norn Queen was not part of the invasion, but instead had lain within the mountain since Ameton Epsilon IV's previous Tyranid invasion, two hundred and fifty years ago. Though the Norn Queen was thought to have been killed, when Mount Antigonos collapsed during the battle, the Ordo Xenos' research discovered it was possible for a deceased Norn to remain psychically active. Hull theorized that is what occurred and that the Norn's body served as a psychic beacon, which had drawn the Tyranids to the world once more. Though it was unclear what the Xenos intended to do with the Norn's body, Hull ordered that it be destroyed before they succeeded. Doing so would also extinguish the Norn's psychic beacon and end its threat to Epsilon IV.[1m]
But to ensure they were successful in destroying the Norn Queen's body, Inquisitor Lord Hull entrusted Julius with an anti-psyker Speculum Charge. When the bomb exploded, it would not only put an end to the Norn's psychic beacon, but would also kill any other psychic creatures that were caught in its blast or shock waves.[1n] However Julius and his First Company would remain in reserve with the Speculum Charge, until the Norn's body was found in Mount Antigonos. The Inquisitor then ordered the attack on the mountain and Epistolary Antonius successfully located a cave that led to the Norn. The First Company then teleported to its location with the bomb and charged towards the Norn. They were joined by Inquisitor Lord Hull, while the rest of the nearby Imperial forces defended the cave's entrance from the waves of Tyranids that began rushing towards it. The First Company and Inquisitor then reached the massive remains of the Norn Queen, but they were confronted by a horde of Tyranids. A cyclopean creature also rose from the Norn Queen's entrails and unleashed its psychic powers upon them as well. Hull used his own psychic might to protect the First Company, but several would be killed by the creature before Julius finally destroyed it. When Tyranids continued to rush to the Norn's defense, however, Julius volunteered to activate the Speculum Charge and ordered the others to retreat from the cave. After they did so, the First Captain activated the bomb which erupted in a massive explosion that ended the Norn Queen's threat and made Julius an Imperial martyr. The Speculum Charge also caused the Tyranid's Synapse creatures to collapse and without their leaders, the Xenos were able to be defeated.[1o]
