Grimnyr
The Grimnyr, or Living Ancestors, are Kin who can commune with the Votann[2a] and are blessed with psychic powers from a rare and important Cloneskein.[1]
Description
Grimnyrs are given rare psychoactive Cloneskeins that allow them to exist as some of the only quasi-psychic beings of their kind. Their most important duty is communing with an Ancestor Core, making them universally respected in their society.[2a] They gather in close-knit conclaves within their Kindred, occasionally embarking on solitary journeys to little-visited or long-abandoned territories. They are reserved and stern even for Kin standards, holding their most profound insights into the workings of the Ancestor Cores from all but their own kind. At the same time, they recognize the importance of their services and will humbly make themselves available to any within the Kindred that requires their assistance.[4]
Grimnyr genetic abilities, dubbed the Skeinwrought Discipline, allows them to use Barrier-Tech to more safely harness the raw power of the Warp. The Grimnyr are defended and further augmented by two mechanical CORVs that hover alongside them.[1] Thus can Grimnyr can utilize a variety of psychic abilities such as precognitive mindsense[3a], protective wards, telepathy, physical enhancement, blasts of lightning and fire, Force Field negation, and the direct manifestation of anger and disdain into the physical force of weight.[2c]
Besides their role as essentially the Kin equivalent of Psykers, Grimnyr are also seen as wise sages, spiritual advisors, messengers, and record-keepers.[2c][3b] Their closeness to the Votann has led to them being seen as inspirational figures in wider Kin society, with their presence serving to steel flagging spirits and fortify wavering resolve.[4]
Lord Grimnyr
Lords Grimnyr or High Grimnyrs[3c] are the highest of their kind, and typically a Kindred maintains exactly one. The mechanism by which they are chosen is unknown outside of their order, yet all Kin know it requires great wisdom, guidance, and insight. Within the Votannic Council, the Lord Grimnyr is held to be the voice of the Ancestors themselves and acts as a walking conduit for both their lore and gestalt quasi-psychic might. Nor is this role purely ceremonial or advisory, for they are also formidable warriors on the battlefield wielding their Ancestral Warding Staves.[2c]
Trivia

- The name Grimnyr could be inspired by Grimnir, one of the names of Odin in Norse mythology. From a visual point of view the model design of the Grimnyr is also reminiscent of representations of Odin.
