Ironkin

The Ironkin are sapient robots of the Leagues of Votann.[1]
Description
Ironkin are created only at the will of the Votann Ancestor Cores, though for reasons unknown they are seeing fit to release fewer and fewer.[10] No one is quite sure when they were created, though the Ironkin are known to have accompanied the kin since the species' earliest days,[1] long before the oldest of surviving records.[11a] Similar to how Kin emerge from their Crucibles fully developed thanks to their Cloneskeins, Ironkin are birthed from forges as a fully developed Cerebral Unit with a specialization in a particular role such as labour or combat. The common Votann-based ancestry and similar method of birth between Kin and Ironkin has facilitated their status as societal equals. Whether one is made from meat or metal, kin is kin. Upon their creation Ironkin are fully welcome into their respective Hold by the rest of the Kin.[10]
Ironkin are computationally advanced enough that they have learned to mimic the squats' social behavior so well that they are fully integrated into the species' society. Each Ironkin consists of a cerebral unit (or CU) – woven with microfield generators that make it very hard to destroy – and a unique mechanical body. The CU's contain the essence of the Ironkin, and they can even survive without a body for a time as long as it remains intact.[10] However, their bodies are not some component to be replaced – they are deeply personal, as much as the bodies of the kin are. An Ironkin's body is designed to fulfill a certain niche in kin society, such as mining support units, cargo luggers, combat pilots, shock troopers, or even wayfinders.[1] While they are birthed with specialties, these roles are not set in stone and an Ironkin may gravitate to a new calling as their experience and knowledge grows. While fully self-aware, their programmed nature means they are not able to truly experience their own emotions and drives, so it is a rare Ironkin that shows ambition or a desire to command.[10]
Though the purpose of the Ironkin is to support squats in every aspect of their lives, they are neither held in servitude nor treated as lessers. The Ironkin are simply designed to want to be helpful. However, they can only imitate the emotions of the squats, and it is rare, but not unknown, for an Ironkin to possess ambition or seek to become a leader. In battle, an Ironkin will fight beside kin and will often accompany Brôkhyr Iron-masters as assistants alongside less complex COG robots, offering their technical support and pitching in to combat in a pinch.[1] Other Ironkin may inhabit specialized combat bodies, such as Steeljacks.[10]
When dealing with outsiders, Ironkin may activate a mirror or glare filter, turning the outside of their domed heads reflective, obfuscating their mechanical nature.[7] As mechanical beings, Ironkin can be corrupted by Vashtorr's abilities. In such a scenario they mutate horrifically before turning on their former kinfolk.[5]
