Lord Castellan Ursarkar E. Creed (URR-sar-kar kreed)[15] was a Lord General of the Astra Militarum and Lord Castellan of Cadia during the Thirteenth Black Crusade. He was the most renowned of all Cadian Shock Troopers and led Imperial forces through the most important battles that the Cadians have ever faced, from raids by the Eldar to the periodic Black Crusades led by the forces of Chaos.
Jarran Kell, Creed's loyal Colour Sergeant, was always found by his side and has fought through countless battles with him.[2]

Biography
Early life
Creed was born in 959.M41[7] on Cadia. His father, formerly a Cadian Shock Trooper, had a sheiling in Kasr Gallan. When he was eight, cultists attacked Kasr Gallan and killed his father, his mother and his sister. He remained under a bed with the corpse of his sister, trying to hide himself, when a Space Marine, dressed in gleaming black power armour and swathed in cream-coloured robes that hid his face, lifted the bed and gave him a laspistol before speaking with a voice that was deep, ancient and lonely.[5]
What happened after that is unknown, but then Creed was found by Orsani Rudvald of the Cadian 8th in the ruins of the city of Kasr Gallan. In one hand was clutched that old laspistol, and in the other a tattered copy of De Gloria Macharius.[2] Creed refused to speak of the atrocities he witnessed, or how long he was forced to survive on his own.[2][13] The Cadian 8th were impressed by this boy's courage and determination and adopted him. When he was old enough, he joined the ranks. He quickly became an excellent soldier and was drafted into the Whiteshields, the elite legion for the young of Cadia. This is where he met his future Colour Sergeant Jarran Kell.[2]
Whiteshield
Soon after becoming a whiteshield Creed would face the constant war and death expected of a Cadian, as he was thrust into the Drussite Crusade. By the time the Cadian forces were victorious, Creed had been promoted to Captain and Jarran Kell was made his Colour Sergeant. From this position, he often led from the front lines, earning him the respect of the men under his command. In official matters Creed was as disciplined as any Cadian officer, but he knew when to turn a blind eye, and as such is disliked by many Commissars.[2][13]
Officer
"[Creed] is the finest of the hunting hawks."
Creed rose quickly through the officer corps, proving to be a masterful strategist, adept at coordinating both defence and attack. He had a natural genius for commanding any unit of men, whether it was a platoon or an entire army, and his tactical genius was of a kind not seen in the Imperium for generations.[2] In particular, he is legendary for his ability to infiltrate troops, even Super-Heavy War Machines behind enemy lines, and many commanders emulate his strategies in order to rapidly redeploy their own forces.[17][See Trivia]
In 977.M41 Creed led the 8th Cadian on the world of Amistel, alongside Colonel Sackville Slade from the 219th Albitern Grenadiers and Khan Harumann of an unnamed Attilan unit. Creed's willingness to not follow protocol, and his lowborn status, caused a row between the Cadian and Albitern officers (though the Attilan officer gained immense respect for the Cadian). After Creed gained favour with Field Marshall Kassel, Colonel Slade was determined to "teach Creed a lesson". He gathered twenty men from his own regiment, but his plans were foiled before they could begin. As punishment Colonel Slade was transferred to a penal unit.[13]
During the Hrud migration of 983-985.M41, Creed fought with Kell at his side throughout, and was commander of the forces that attacked and killed the Chaos Lord Brule on Treconondal. He was then promoted to Lord General of Cadia, and his first victory was over the Ulthwé Eldar raid on Aurent in 992.M41. He was now the most successful living commander of Cadia and only his lowly birth held him back from holding the highest command positions.[1][13] In 996.M41[6], Creed led the Cadian 8th on Besana against the Chaos cultists of Luciver Anckor, a faction called Anckorites.[4]
Battle of Tyrok Fields
"As is ever the case with the foul tricks of the heretic, their deeds draw forth greater resolve and courage from the faithful and few are more loyal in their faith than the General, Ursarkar E. Creed."
In 999.M41,[1] right before the beginning of the 13th Black Crusade, units of the Volscani turned traitor on the Tyrok Fields, near Kasr Tyrok, during a mustering of Cadian, Volscani, and Mordian regiments. The exact cause is not fully known, some within the Inquisition suspected the Volscani feared to face the forces of Chaos again[13] while others suspect they had fallen to the ruinous powers.[1] Creed and Kell had been en route to the mustering in an 8th Cadian ornithopter when the Volscani turned on their fellow regiments.[13]
Creed's ornithopter landed, and he joined his command squad, taking personal command of his forces on the ground. Kell unfurled the banner of the 8th Cadian and begun the Imperium Gloriam chant among the regiment. Creed took a knee, and made the sign of the aquila across his chest. Some veteran guardsmen would later claim Creed was sensing the vibrations in the ground to know the correct time to launch and attack. Creed stood and then gave the order to affix bayonets and charge. Following the costly victory over the Volscani, Creed founded the desecrated remains of Governor Primus Marus Porelska. Creed wrapped the body in the banner of the 8th, and personally carried it from the battlefield.[13]
In times of emergency the special rank of Lord Castellan can be bestowed, either for life or until the crisis is over. Whilst initially there were opponents to Creed being given the title of Lord Castellan, eventually all stood down for the sake of unity. Gradually his potential political enemies stepped back and allowed Creed to be named Lord Castellan of Cadia. Creed refused the title three times, but realised the rank and file Cadians would only accept him as the Lord Castellan. This was met with jubilation among the rank and file Cadians.[2][13]
13th Black Crusade
"I am not averse to facing the enemy myself. Why should I be? In my right hand I hold the finest regiment of soldiers from a world of soldiers. In my left hand I hold the will and favour of the divine Emperor of Mankind."
Ultimately, Creed had to fight off Abaddon's 13th Black Crusade, the most devastating Chaos crusade yet. With Jarran Kell at his side, he managed to co-ordinate the forces surrounding Cadia to prevent the dark gods from gaining a hold in the material universe, but only at the cost of many lives and even one of the planets of the Cadian system. During the final fighting on Cadia, Kell was killed to buy time for Creed to escape from the Bringers of Despair and he linked up with various other Imperial commanders including Belisarius Cawl, Saint Celestine, Orven Highfell, Greyfax, and Marius Amalrich. In the final battle beneath the surface of Cadia, Creed and his allies sought to delay Abaddon's advance until the Pylons of Cadia could be fully activated. Avenging Kell, Creed was able to save Saint Celestine and Greyfax during their duel against Abaddon, but lost an arm in the process. As Abaddon was about to finish off his hated adversary, he was impaled from behind by Celestine.[3]
However, Abaddon was ultimately able to destroy Cadia by redirecting remnants of the Blackstone Fortress Will of Eternity into its surface, destabilizing its pylons and pulling the planet into the Warp. Creed and his Cadian 8th bought time for the Imperial forces on Cadia to evacuate, holding back endless hordes of Daemons. As Cadia died around him, Creed accepted his fate but was confronted by a giant in scaled armour. The giant laughed and said that Creed's time need not to end here.[3] The giant proved to be the Necron Overlord Trazyn the Infinite, who put Creed in a gallery on Solemnace, labelled the Last Stand of Ursarkar Creed.[9]
Legacy
Ursarkar was succeeded as Castellan of Cadia by his daughter with an Imperial chamberlain[12], Ursula J. Creed.[10] Creed left behind a data-crystal in his personal vault on Cadia shortly before his death regarding a contingency for his people should Cadia be destroyed in the coming war with Abaddon. Ursula has been successful in recovering this crystal, and afterwards her father's cloak was mysteriously discovered within her personal chambers.[12]
Equipment
Before the Fall of Cadia, Creed used two laspistols for a very long time. One of them was an old Mars-pattern model, battered, scratched and with a faded serial number stencilled in small white letters across one side; probably the same pistol he was found with in Kasr Gallan. The other was a more ornate piece, designed for an officer, with brass fittings to the handle and an aquila on the barrel.[5]

Trivia
As part of his debut in Codex: Imperial Guard (5th Edition), Ursarkar Creed came with the special rule Tactical Genius, which could designate a single infantry or vehicle model to have the Scouts special rule[2], allowing said unit the potential to infiltrate behind enemy lines.[18] As the rule on publication did not specify what kind of vehicle or make any exclusions, players were allegedly using it to infiltrate Super-Heavy Vehicles and Imperial Titans leading to various jokes among players and humorous memes on the internet about Creed and his "tactical genius".[16] This would seemingly be indirectly acknowledged by Games Workshop itself in a Warhammer Community article in relation to the "Gifted Commander" rule in 9th edition. This rule allowed for Super-Heavy Vehicles to be infiltrated, but not Titans.[17]
