Messelina was an Imperial Saint who is celebrated and held in high regard across the Moebian Domain to this day.[3a]

History

At an unspecified point in the Moebian Domain's history, a girl named Messelina gathered a significant following in her zealous pursuit of heretics and the liberation of many worlds in the Domain. She and her followers liberated many Moebian worlds through blood and fire, and she is said to have brought on an age of peace to the domain.[3] At some point in her history, Saint Messelina battled the Daemon Kul'garod, leaving much of the Atoman deserts outside of Tertium nothing but barren, rad-blasted rock.[6]

Messelina was a devout follower of the Imperial Creed and would attempt to dissuade any worship or excessive praise of herself. Many hymns were written of her during her time, but she rejected all of them, for she feared she would become a subject of idolatry. Many more hymns, shrines, and grand cathedrals have been raised in her name after her death.[2f]

Her followers are noted as having liberated Arvania City and a combat sword belonging to one of these followers would go on to become a revered relic held by the Shrine of Saint Messelina in Purity.[2c] At some point, Messelina is said to have beheaded the corrupt rulers of one of Branx's moons. This would later be remembered and celebrated in the Moebian Domain as Severance Day.[4]

Millennia ago, great factorums in Hive Tertium were built to supply Saint Messelina's crusade through the Moebian Domain. These facilities were known as Machinaria Gloriana. Each is rumoured to house some technological marvel that significantly aided the war effort. One of these long-forgotten wonders have been recently rediscovered in the Era Indomitus. Atelium Foundryplex Omega V, also known as Clandestium Gloriana, is a facility that can produce Moebian Steel.[5]

She would eventually be betrayed by members of the Imperial Creed,[3a] likely leading to her death. A group of her followers hunted down these betrayers and went on to form the Cult of Sanguine Reprisal. The cult continues to operate in the Moebian Fringe to this day,[2a] millennia after Messelina's death.[5]

Overview

Saint Messelina's opinions of psykers are a contentious subject in the present day Era Indomitus. While Historitors argue about her attitude towards psykers, the keepers of her shrines insist she abhorred them.[2e] Some claim that she herself was a psyker.[3b]

It is said that Messelina witnessed the fall of Komaris, the Imperial bastion of the Moebian Fringe, and shed tears when witnessing its fall. A moon near Komaris, Messelina Gloriana, would become a minor Shrine World bearing her namesake. Many shrines dedicated to her would be built on the world.[2q][2b]

There is no mention of Ogryns in Caladoc's Life of Saint Messelina. Some think this might indicate that the vat-grown strain of Ogryn had not yet been introduced to the Moebian Domain during Messelina's lifetime.[2g]

Teachings

The purported teachings of Messelina revolve around merciless killing through righteous fury,[2j] judicious application of violence,[2n] and purifying flame.[2h][2i]

Some zealots believe they can hear Messelina when in prayer. These devout individuals believe she speaks to them saying "Burn them" and "Make them unto ashes in my name."[2h] Many sects that venerate Saint Messelina believe in the purifying powers of flame, especially in the case of purifying heretics.[2i] Hexorcists are very much in line with Messelina's teachings.[2j] Many adherents to the teaching of Saint Messelina carry a set of delicate Prayer Chimes with them.[2k]
