Atoma Prime is a desert Hive World and capital world of the Moebian Domain. Hive Tertium is the centre of civilisation and industry on this planet, housing nearly its entire population.[5a]

Overview

Atoma Prime and the wider Moebian Domain is ruled by the Lord Moebian, an office currently held by Lord Constance Margrave.[5a] The current Lord Margrave of Atoma is the 13th successive member of House Margrave to hold this office since M36.[3]

As the centre of the Moebian Domain, Atoma Prime is of great importance to the regional Imperial presence. Their industrial output of Leman Russ Battle Tanks and other armour is paramount to the security of the domain. In M41, the Moebian Domain's borders have been beset by various Chaos and Xenos threats, locally referred to as the "Darktide". These threats come from beyond the Moebian Fringe Regions, areas that border hostile Wilderness Space. Defence against the Darktide in the Fringe War is of paramount importance for the domain. Atoma Prime has raised many regiments over the millennia to attempt to hold the Darktide at bay, keeping Atoma Prime and the core worlds of the domain safe, for now.[2]

In early M41, the myriad of Darktide threats along the domain's fringes begun surging and have flared to an extreme degree not seen since the devastating Fringe incursions of M35.[3] The Fringe Wars are Atoma Prime and the Moebian Domain's primary concern.[8a]

History

At some point in M41, Atoma was invaded by Xenos but successfully defended by Moebian guardsmen. This took place about 8 centuries ago from the present day in M42.[4w]

Planetary Information

Climate

Atoma Prime is a desert world in late-stage environmental collapse. Breathing apparatuses are required. Every few months there are super storms that unleash massive amounts of lightning, corrosive rain, and dust storms.[5a] Millennia of resource exploitation and industry has left the majority of Atoma's surface an acrid desert. The world's biosphere had been degrading for millennia prior to its first hive cities, but it finally collapsed completely in M35. This final push was caused by a significant push of resource exploitation and industry as the Moebian Domain recovered from its near destruction during the Fringe incursions of M35. The first Lord Moebian of House Barquette ruled during this time that oversaw the increased prosperity and ecological collapse that resulted in the creation of sprawling hive cities.[3]

Geology

Atoma Prime has an active core that generates infrequent tectonic movement. The active core also provides heat and energy for the hive cities.[5a]

Locations

Tertium Hive

Main article: Hive Tertium

Tertium Hive is the main hive of Atoma.[9] Touted as the centre of civilisation on the planet, it houses 99% of the planet's population within its walls.[5a] Sometimes "referred to as the jewel of the Moebian Domain".[4v] It is from Tertium's High Hive spires that Lord Margrave and the other nobles rule the city.[5a]

Other Hive Cities

It is rumoured that there is a second, lost hive city on Atoma that still retains some residents, known to some as Tertium's sister city. Some residents of Hive Tertium say that it is better left forgotten.[9]

Witherlands

"For many millennia it was thought that leaving the hive Tertium meant certain death…"

All areas outside of Tertium's walls are referred to as the Witherlands, or sometimes simply the Outside by Tertium's inhabitants. The acrid, red-orange dust that covers this planetary desert can be extremely corrosive.[4h] It is said the rad-blasted lands outside Tertium are all that remains of the battle between Saint Messelina and the Daemon Kul'garod.[10]

The dust also has a particular odour that can't be easily removed from clothing. Like most worlds of the Moebian Domain, the air is filled with toxins that would quickly sicken even the hardiest of individuals.[4j] A combination of hoods, masks, and rebreathers can protect from the worst of the atmospheric toxins and partially protect an individual from sandstorms.[4i]

There are roaming nomads and entire tribes living in these wastelands. Some hive-dwellers escape into the Witherlands to scavenge materials or wares, returning years later smelling of the acrid orange dust.[4x]

Society

Tithe

Tertium Hive is massive and what's more, as the capital seat for the Moebian Sector, is responsible for delivering the Imperial Tithe that all owe to the Emperor. To keep the precious flow of materials and people running smoothly, the Adeptus Arbites have established multiple precinct fortresses throughout Tertium.[4l]

The Imperial Tithe has been slowly, perceptively declining over the past decades, if not centuries. The slow erosion of the production quotas. The imperceptible decline in numbers during regimental musters. Its tithe of weapons, munitions, fuel, soldiers, and foodstuffs to the to the Adeptus Administratum has been steadily decreasing.[4n]

Local Arbitrators brought this report to the Adeptus Arbites leader on Atoma, Marshall Votern, who subsequently passed an edict, Atoma Prime was now under investigation. This notably increased the Adeptus Arbites presence on the planet prior to the uprising in Hive Tertium and Battle for Tertium.[4n]

Any brief interruptions to the manufactorum production in Tertium could cause a major blow to the hive's upcoming tithe delivery.[4o]

Initial investigation of Atoma's production outputs have highlighted a worrying reliance of so-called cartels operating with seeming impunity throughout the hive. Their influence even appears to reach off world, or at least outside the hive somehow. Several minor cartels have been terminally shut down by Arbitrators since then.[4p]

Interrogations have also yielded information indicating that forces on Atoma are working to undermine the productivity of the Moebian Sector, and that these force have links to Nox Alpha.[4m]

Moebian Steel

Main article: Moebian Steel

What makes Atoma so valuable to the Moebian Domain and wider Imperium is their prolific production of Leman Russ Battle Tanks and other armour. The armoured Astra Militarum regiments of the Moebian Domain are hugely reliant on the production output of the many manufactorums upon Atoma Prime.[4r][4s] At least half of Atoma Prime's subsector is supplied by its manufactorums[4q], with one Atoman manufactorum being worth three lesser ones of the subsector.[4t]

However, the quantity of Atoman output doesn't hinder the quality of their products. Being produced with Moebian Steel, a stronger and tougher metal, smelted from a special balance of minerals[4s] found only on Atoma, known as Moebian Iron[4r]. This remarkable material and Atoma's exceptional production facilities have made it the centre of the Moebian Domain since its inception.[3][4r][4s]

Known Noble Houses

Satellites

Atoma has 3 natural satellites: Atrox is the largest moon and serves as a naval dock, while the two smaller moons are called Tomal and Tomek. In addition, an artificial satellite serving as an orbital dock and defence station also orbits Atoma.[5a]

Star System

Atoma's planetary system has a singular Sol-like star named Aton with 7 planets orbiting it. The planets include Atoma Prime, 2 small rocky planets, 3 large gas giants, and a small icy world at the system's edge. Atoma Prime is the only inhabited world but others also have orbital stations and small research outposts.[5a]
