Leaders of the Ynnari

The Ynnari, also known as the Pathless or the Reborn,[7] are the members of a newly formed eponymous Aeldari religious group that worship the God Ynnead and believe their race can be saved from the oblivion and from Slaanesh by the rise of the God of the Dead, and fight tirelessly to fully awaken him.[1] The Ynnari draw from every element of Aeldari civilisation, united in their belief that Ynnead is the only hope for their people.[18] The Ynnari remain a fringe element of Aeldari society, scorned by the majority of traditionalist Asuryani and self-centered Drukhari. Despite this, they have had a disproportionaly large effect on the galaxy.[22]

Overview

Led by Ynnead's Emissary Yvraine, the group is composed of Eldar from the Craftworlds, Corsair groups, Exodites, Commorragh and even from among the Harlequins. With their combined might they have become a rising force in the galaxy, who not only seek to bring about Ynnead's birth, but also return the Eldar to the glory their race had before their Empire fell. However, the arrogant coercion they employ to save their race has alienated as many Eldar as it has united under Yvraine's command. Worse still, many see the Ynnari as corrupted by the very daemonic forces they seek to thwart, while others believe they are already dead inside. And because of their growing strength, they have drawn the attention of the Chaos Gods, who have now unleashed their forces to hunt down the group wherever they go. Slaanesh in particular seeks to destroy the Ynnari, in order to end the threat they pose to him.[1a]

The Ynnari seek to fully empower Ynnead and defeat Slaanesh. However, rather than following the expected myth that would require the death of all Eldar to awaken Ynnead, they aim to achieve this in a ritual that would not require the sacrifice of the Eldar Race in the descending Rhana Dandra, a method known as the Seventh Path. Since the fifth Crone Sword has been moved into the Palace of Slaanesh, the Seventh Path seems hopeless.[5c]

The Ynnari cult is exclusively made up of Aeldari, for their race wouldn't deign to speak of its secrets to even the most learned of the lesser-races.[19a] Some elements of the Imperium are hostile to the Ynnari. The Grey Knights have led purges of their cults after their Prognosticars detected the fateful patterning of convergent daemonic invocations in them.[8]

Ornamentation

Sign of the Phoenix used by the Ynnari;[19a] Ynnead's rune.[1c]

The Reborn pledged to Yvraine's banner come from all walks of Aeldari life. They display their permanent allegiance by painting all or portions of their attire with the deep reds, purples, and blacks. These colours are reminiscent of the ancient Aeldari Empire's ghost halls and memorial gardens. Additionally, they often adopt baroque armour pieces, also reminiscent of the ancient Aeldari. They adorn themselves with the crosspiece-and-crucible Rune of Ynnead, the Sign of the Phoenix, or a combination of their prior allegiance's icon meshed with one used by the Ynnari. Others may wish to keep their adopted allegiance a close secret, for one reason or another. These Reborn are utterly devoted to the cult and see only one path forward for the Aeldari race - the utter dedication to the deathly creed of the Ynnari.[19c] Those who are more recent converts or wish to still pay homage to their former beliefs and ideals, may instead sport a red band of cloth to display one's support of the Ynnari cause. These red bands are typically wrapped around one's upper arm or thigh. This was once an ancient aeldari practice grieving practice, displaying that someone may wish to be left alone in order to mourn the loss of a friend or family member. The Ynnari have since repurposed this ancient cultural practice to show one's dedication to the death cult.[19a]

Runes

Runes displaying Ynnari allegiance are often coloured in white or black atop the deep red of the Reborn. The Sign of the Phoenix is a complex Ynnari rune and seen on various forces, rallying under the pursuit of the rebirth of their ancient days. The Ynnari's rune of Ynnead, God of Death, is partially derived from that of Biel-Tan. Differences include having the heart device seen in the Biel-Tan rune symbolically missing. The Ynnari symbol is often worn with a stylised oval at its apex inside the crucible, symbolising the spirit stone taken within. Drukhari might seek to ingratiate themselves to their more traditional Asuryani allies by using the craftworlder rune for the Ynnari.[2d]

The Sign of the Phoenix,[19a] or Ynnead's rune, is similar to that of the Avatar of Khaine. Instead of being surmounted with the crown of the Bloody-Handed God, it has an infinity rune. The infinity rune commonly appears on Eldar wraith constructs and is a symbol of the Eldar's eternal spirit.[1c]

History

Night of Revelations

Eldrad leads the Masque of the Midnight Sorrow at the Battle of Port Demesnus[2a]

After the spoiled ritual of the Ulthwé Farseer Eldrad Ulthran and the Harlequins of the Masque of the Midnight Sorrow at the Battle of Port Demesnus, which sought to turn the crystal moon of Coheria into a Psychic Beacon brighter than the Astronomican which could call to all craftworld Infinity Circuits but instead saw Coheria destroyed, first roused Ynnead from his slumber he imparted a fraction of his will into Yvraine as she was slipped between life and death[19b] at the hand of Corag Hai the priestess of Morai-Heg in the Crucibael of Commoragh[19a] – an apotheosis which tore open Khaine's Gate and triggered a catastrophic Dysjunction[20] and those that followed her to flee Commorragh through Sec Maegra into the Webway beset by Daemonettes, her Bloodbrides, allied Eldar Corsairs, with the Visarch and his Incubi becoming the first of the Ynnari.[2a]

Fracture of Biel-Tan

Yvraine awakens the Yncarne within Biel-Tan[1a]

Whereupon the Ynnari travelled to Ursulia where the Infinity Circuit of Biel-Tan above faced a daemonic taint from The Masque of Slaanesh and out of desperation to remove it the Biel-tani turned to the Yvraine, who explained the mission of the Ynnari as revealed to her by Ynnead: to walk the "Seventh Path" and gather the ancient Crone Swords now spread across the galaxy which together could revive the god of death, and in a demonstration of the truth of the path pulled Asu-var the Sword of Silent Screams from within the Infinity Circuit and with it awoke the Yncarne[2a] ushering forth the light in the Warp which Eldrad could not on Coheria. The ripples of Ynnead spread through the Warp and was felt by all Psykers, across the galaxy piles of bone rattled into the shape of Ynnead's rune. The infinity circuits of all other Craftworlds glowed white hot, and Farseers skeins of fate reshaped themselves as the Rhana Dandra was delayed.[2b] Within Biel-Tan the Yncarne instantaneously banished the Daemons from Biel-Tan and its daemon-infected Wraithbone sundered in the process – worse yet the souls within the circuit itself were released into the void where Slaanesh could claim them, and only through tremendous effort were the souls bound anew to Wraith Constructs in a joint effort by Biel-Tan and, for the first time, with allies found among the Harlequins of the Midnight Sorrow and all manner of Biel-Tani, most prominently the Autarch Meliniel and the Dire Avengers of the Silvered Blade Shrine, united in their effort as the Ynnari.[2b]

Debate within Ulthwé

On Ulthwé, the seer council refused to commit their forces to the Ynnari cause – taking the moment of Yvraine's appearance to censure and exile Eldrad Ulthran. While arguing in the Farseers defense and for direct Ynnari intervention in capturing the Crone Swordss in the Crone Worlds rather than abdicating the responsibility to Il-Kaithe,[2b] Eldar from Craftworld Altansar unexpectedly appeared from the Webway appeared suddenly to plead urgent action within the Eye of Terror, revealing that Ynnead's nascent consciousness had had a hand in their survival of the millenia within the Eye of Terror.[19c] Aware they could not themselves return to the Eye of Terror Warlock Guentilian Onyxblade slit their own throat to pledge their soul to Yvraine. Sensing their master within Yvraine, the Gyrinx Alorynis began to follow her, the act earning the Ynnari allies among the remaining Altansari. Unconvinced, the Seer Council turned to hostility against the assembled parties before the appearance of Kysaduras the Anchorite, accompanied by Harlequins of the Midnight Sorrow, the momentousness of his appearance before the council ending hostilities and settling the debate: the Ynnari would act and those among Ulthwé who wished join them would do so.[2b]

Belial IV

The Yncarne wields Vilith-zhar the Sword of Souls[2c]

Together venturing into the Eye of Terror, the ynnari landed upon the Crone World of Belial IV where below the silver moon they encountered Urien Rakarth and the Prophets of Flesh acting as mercenary agents of Vect who ordered a hunt for Yvreaine.[19b] The melee attracted the Daemons of Slaanesh[2b] – Rakharth equally horrified and exhilarated to learn those Haemonculi felled were reduced to dust simultaneously in every vat-clone, phylactery, and secret remnant.[2c] In the fray Yvraine noticed a radius of dull grey Spirit Stones devoid of their power and at its center they located the resting place of a buried crone sword, and from within the earth the Yncarne burst forth weilding Vilith-zhar the Sword of Souls.[2b] The second Crone Sword of Belial IV would have to wait. The force turned towards the ruins of a shattered ancient city, finding and fortifying the museum structure of the Memorial Hall of Atransis and an immense yellow rune-portal hidden to all but the dead and those who bear their blessing where The Soulseeker, Wraithknight of Iyanden ushered them forth into the Webway beyond while Iyanna Arienal and her Wraith Constructs guarded their exit.[2c]

Iyanden

After long weeks of arduous travel, they found their exit: a hidden portal within Vaidh Wayport on Craftworld Iyanden finding the craftworld under siege by the forces of Nurgle, as many craftworlds across the galaxy faced Daemon threats,[19b] their Asuryani and Harlequin contingents conscripted into battle and the rest sequestered to guest quarters. Yvraine called upon old debts from her Corsair allies who reach the Craftworld within days, and in so doing the remaining Ynnari were brought forth to defend the craftworld: banishing Daemons and the infections they spread. Yvraine asked to be brought to the dead and infectous body of Prince Yriel who had ended the Nurglite assault, whereupon she plunged the Spear of Twilight into the Admiral's chest and he was revived: and the spear revealed as the fourth Crone Sword,[2c] the final still on Belial IV, and returned to the revived prince his spear. Within the Ghost Halls, Iyanna Arienal worked with Yvraine to work a miracle of the God of the Dead, moving the consciousness of the warriors within the Infinity Circuit of Iyanden directly into the infinity circuits of Wraith Constructs without the Spirit Stone conduit, no longer would they walk in a waking dream, rather they were given life anew with which they pledged to serve the Ynnari and end Slaanesh on behalf of the living.[2c]

Journey to Ultramar

Under prophecy from Eldrad, the Ynnari of Iyanden realized that Humans would be their best allies to move against the Great Enemy and traversed the Webway beginning a long journey to Ultramar. Enroute the group were ambushed in a thin part of the Webway known as the Psychedelta by Ahriman, his Prodigal Sons, and nine Exiles in an event that would become known as the War in the Labyrinth, which saw many Ynnari fall before the arrival of the Phoenix Lords of the Asurya: Asurmen, Jain Zar, Fuegan, Maugan Ra, Baharroth, and Karandras – those who would one day usher in the Rhana Dandra. Yvraine was able to lure Ahriman away, by resurrecting a dozen rubicae and sending them into a Webway fisure, in time moving beyond the Psychedelta. Battle-worn down to half their number and absent the Phoenix Lords, the gathering followed the laughter of Cegorach through the Webway. As they arrived at the spherical portal to Klaisus, they were met by Wyches of the Cult of Strife who sought to understand if Ynnead could end the The Thirst and a moment was had of religious reverence as Biel-tani Aspect Warriors pledged themselves to Ynnead putting aside their helms to trust in an afterlife.[2c]

Ynnari Aeldari rescuing the Imperial forces on Klaisus[2c]

Upon Klaisus they found a wasteland stained with blood, and an entrentched force of Imperials rallied around Saint Celestine: Black Templars, Inquisitor Greyfax and the Sisters of Battle, Imperial Guardsmen lead by Marshal Amalrich,[9a] Adeptus Mechanicus with their destroyed Knights lead by none other than Belisarius Cawl locked in combat with the Black Legion. The Ynnari drove forward to repel the Chaos Space Marines and after three assaults Abaddon relented. The Ynnari and the Imperials wearily joined eachothers company beneath the Crone's Claw. After three hours of tense assurances that they would not kill each other, together they moved through the webway upon Macragge.[2c]

Resurrection of Guilliman

The Ynnari forced divided, Eldrad and Meliniel both led splinter forces upon other prescient fronts, while Yvraine and a reduced force including her Bloodbrides and a force of Incubi and Dire Avengers lead by the Visarch, exited the webway on the Atheron Mountains with the Imperials on Macragge and engaged the Black Legion as they marched together towards the Fortress of Hera and were met by Stormravens and Stormhawks of the Ultramarines which ferried them past the battlements. In the fortress they met Ultramarines Chapter Master Marneus Calgar, Captain Agemman, Librarian Tigurius, and the Grey Knight Voldus where Belisarius Cawl impressed upon the assembled group with importance that they must be ushered to the resting place of Roboute Guilliman. Together the group travelled by Gunship to the Shrine of Guilliman where they pressed forwards through Black Legionnaires to the throne of Guilliman and together with Cawl's Autoreliquary revived the Primarch.[9a] The Ynnari stayed to see the Black Legion driven off the planet and as tutors to Guilliman as he learned of the past ten-thousand years.[9b]

Pylons

After departing Ultramar, the Ynnari set forward to defend the remaining Pylons working amongst the Aeldari to find those that would newly stand vigil over them.[9b]

Raid on Saim-Hann

Main article: Raid on Saim-Hann

The Ynnari urged a meeting with the Cieftains of Saim-Hann to convince them to lend forces to their cause, but the meeting is interrupted by a sudden attack by mercenaries in a Realspace Raid led by Drazhar, who had been hired to kill Yvraine by Asdrubael Vect (who was feigning his death at that time). The opening strikes of Drazhar were blocked by the Visarch and the two forces were nearly matched before the sudden appearance and intervention of Jain Zar who drove the Drukhari from the Craftworld.[14]

Zandros

In retreat from Saim Hann, Yvraine and her compatriots arrived at her next fated destination: the dead Craftworld of Zandros where she would attempt to locate an ancient Webway Gate to Belial IV where she had lost the last of the Crone Swords. While meditating in the Craftworld, Yvraine was met with the dark revelation that Jain Zar had been slain by Drazhar within Commorragh and her body taken by Mandrakes to be forgotten within Aelindrach. Yvraine prayed to Ynnead that the soul of the great Eldar be given deliverance – from her chest a mote of power surged forth into the void, just as one had surged from Coheria to herself, finding the corpse of the Saim-Hanni Howling Banshee Exarch Qintui'yenh within Aelindrach who found the mask of Jain Zar and joined with her animus.[14] Deep within the dark realm, Jain Zar opened a Webway portal which ushered forth onto Zandros.

As a sign of loyalty owed between Khaine and Ynnead, Jain Zar tied a red armband to her armour and joined the searching Ynnari.[14] Six days later, Drazhar arrived at the Ynnari camp on Zandros and struck at Yvraine in the dead of night only to be blocked by the blade of Jain Zar, and Drazhar was disarmed and slain. Her duty paid in guarding Yvraine from another death, Jain Zar ignored the prophet's suggestion that the two lead the cult toegether and she departed the craftworld leaving only her red ribbon behind.[14]

Psychic Awakening

Yvraine and the Visarch look at a Webway Gate.[21]

Since the Psychic Awakening began, the Ynnari efforts against Chaos have intensified. Yvraine has been able to gather a great many allies to herself but now also finds herself beset by enemies, most notably Asdrubael Vect[5a] and Shalaxi Helbane[5b]. Helbane has managed to move the last of the fabled Crone Swords into the Palace of Slaanesh. These relics are said to be necessary to defeat Slaanesh without the need to sacrifice the whole of the Eldar race in the Rhana Dandra. Rather than despair at her apparent hopeless situation, Yvraine continues to search for another path to defeat Slaanesh.[5c]

Abilities

The departing souls of fallen warriors nourish the Ynnari and inspire them to exceed the limitations of the living.[18] Sometimes the Ynnari are surrounded by the souls of the dead, whose hissing whispers unnerve and distract nearby foes.[5d]

Members of the Ynnari carry the Spirit Stones of deceased Eldar, whose souls they use to bolster their deadly psychic powers and they are also able to siphon the energy of the recently dead granting themselves unnatural vigor. Those Ynnari who truly give themselves to the worship of Ynnead are able to communicate with the souls of the spirit stones they possess and can also draw upon the deceased Eldars' skills, wisdom and experiences to aid them in battle.[1a]

The Ynnari's Spirit Stones can also be used by the Asuryani to heal their wounds.[14] Yvraine has demonstrated the ability to cure Dark Eldar of their soul-thirst, resulting in many of them joining the ranks of the Ynnari.[15] Her soul magic can also strengthened the bridge between Wraith Constructs and the spirits that pilot them, dimming the haze of their Wraithsight, or binding the souls of Wraithknight twins into one, both housed within the living twin's body. With but a touch, they are able to again move with similar vitality and dexterity as they had in life.[2e]

Revenant Discipline

The psychic discipline of Aeldari soul magic, harnessing the power of revenant energies.[13b]

  • Gaze of Ynnead - The psyker channels the power of Ynnead.[13b]
  • Storm of Whispers - The psyker's voice joins with those of the dead to drive the foe utterly insane.[13b]
  • Word of the Phoenix - The psyker harnesses the revenant energies of the mythical phoenix to restore the life force of fallen warriors.[13b]
  • Unbind Souls - The psyker weakens the bond between an enemy's soul and body, debilitating them.[13b]
  • Shield of Ynnead - The psyker manifests a shield of spiritual energy around their Ynnari allies.[13b]
  • Ancestor's Grace - Draw upon the greatness of the Aeldari genetic legacy and bolster Ynnari allies.[13b]

Organisation

There are two known sub-factions within the Ynnari: The Aeldari Bladehost, who fight under Yvraine and the Soulbound Vanguard, who fight under the Visarch.[1b]
