Stromhelm lies[1] on the northern[2] edge of Ultima Segmentum and was an Imperial Fortress World, during the Horus Heresy.[1]
History
It was already an ancient enclave of Humanity, with sprawling cities and towering macro-fortications, when the Imperium discovered Stromhelm, during the Great Crusade. However the world had also survived centuries of attacks from marauding Xenos and so joyfully agreed to become a part of the Imperium. Its forces then joined the Great Crusade's armies and Stromhelm also later[1] began receiving most of the industrial output of the nearby Forge World Ohmn-Mat.[2] But the Fortress World also lay near the Isstvan System and this made it a target for Warmaster Horus, when the Horus Heresy began.[1]
At first, the Warmaster's emissaries attempted to sway Stromhelm to Horus' side, with promises of riches and glories. These were rejected by the Fortress World though, and their defiance led the Warmaster to order that Stromhelm be burned in a Dark Compliance. Horus not only wanted its destruction, but to also make Stromhelm an example of what would happened to Imperial worlds that refused to join his Dark Empire. This caused petty warlords from all of the Traitor Legions to flock to the Fortress World, as they were eager to curry favour with the Warmaster. By aiding in Stromhelm's destruction, they hoped that they would earn a place in the vanguard of Horus' forces. However the Fortress World would not fall easily and the Traitors faced not only Stromhelm's own warriors, but also other Imperial forces that had survived the Warmaster's treachery. This included Loyalist remnants from the Dropsite Massacre, Siege of Baal, the Battle of Honourum and dozens of other conflicts in the Horus Heresy, who all pledged to give their lives defending Stromhelm. Thanks to their combined efforts, the world withstood Horus' forces for years, but it paid dearly to do so, as its cities and fortresses were left in ruins. By 011.M31 though, the Warmaster began his march towards Terra and he ordered the ending of distractions like the Siege of Stromhelm, so that his full might could be brought to bear on the Imperium's capital. This led a mighty host of Traitors to arrive in the Fortress World's orbit for a final battle with its Imperial defenders, which would decide Stromhelm's fate.[1]
