Darya Nevic, the Ghost of Cocleratum[2c], was an Imperial Guard Sniper.[1a][1b][2a] Originally from the Coclerati Janissaries, she was transferred to the Cadian 217th regiment.[1b]

Biography

Early Life and Career

Darya was born on the planet Cocleratum. As a child she lived in Ticcia. Her father died when she was young; he was interred within the Cathedral of Saint Ophellius in Ticcia.[1a]

After the death of her father, Darya and her mother moved to the capital city of Elborescum. There, Darya lived with her uncle, Ulberti.[1b][1e] She continued living with Ulberti after her mother also died of an illness.[1e]

While living in Elborescum, she was regularly taken to the Cathedral of Macharius and the Saints.[1c] This was partially because one of the priests at the Cathedral, Midoro, was a friend of her uncle's.[1c][1e] She disliked living with her uncle, frequently running away from home and needing to be brought back by the Enforcers.[1e]

As soon as she came of age, Darya enlisted with the Coclerati Janissaries.[1b][1e] After her enlistment, she was trained as a sniper.[1d]

Becoming a Transplant

Some time after the Fall of Cadia and the opening of the Great Rift, Darya was transferred to the Cadian Shock Troopers (who were now unable to receive native Cadian reinforcements due to their homeworld's destruction). She was assigned to the Cadian 217th as one of the regiment's so-called "transplants", serving under Captain Kohl.[1b]

Return to Cocleratum

During the Indomitus Crusade, Darya had the unusual "opportunity" to return to her own homeworld: the Cadian 217th were among the regiments deployed to retake Cocleratum after a heretic uprising had overthrown the planet's government.[1a][1b] She was among the Guardsmen who retook Ticcia.[1a]

After the cultists holding Ticcia had been eliminated, Darya was assigned to a team of snipers (alongside Sergeant Ilya and Corporal Mir) for a special mission: they were to infiltrate the planetary capital, Elborescum, ahead of the next major offensive on the city, in order to assassinate the heretics' leader, a psyker known as Speccius.[1b]

The team entered Elborescum via a series of abandoned maglev tunnels in the hills near Ticcia. After encountering and questioning an Imperial loyalist refugee whose family was hiding in the tunnels, the team learned that Speccius was in the Cathedral of Macharius and the Saints, and that he was guarded by a Heretic Astartes.[1c]

Shortly after entering Elborescum proper, the heretics discovered the sniper team and tried to stop them. While making a stand in the Gardens of the Fountains, the snipers were attacked by a group of cultists and the Heretic Astartes, whose orders were to take one of the Imperials alive and kill the rest.[1e] In the course of the fighting, Mir was killed and Ilya captured. The cultists had left Darya behind, believing her to be dead after she had been knocked unconscious by the explosion of a krak charge.[1e] After retrieving Ilya's long-las[1f], Darya made her way to the Cathedral.[1g] Disguising herself with a cultist's robes and sneaking in, she found that the heretics were going to sacrifice Ilya to open a Warp Rift. It was there that she also saw Speccius - to her horror she saw that "Speccius" was in fact the mutated fusion of her uncle Ulberti and his priest Midoro. Despite Speccius detecting her intrusion with its psychic abilities and being faced with a horde of cultists and the Heretic Astartes, Darya foiled their plans by shooting Ilya's ammunition pack, detonating the krak charges within. The resulting explosion killed Speccius and brought down the building, although Darya was able to escape the collapse in the nick of time, just as the Imperial attack on Elborescum began in earnest.[1g]

Attruso

In the wake of the fighting on Cocleratum, Darya became known as "The Ghost of Cocleratum".[2c][2d] Stories about her spread, and this only continued after her actions on Klodden. She was regarded by some as one of the best soldiers in her regiment; yet, despite her accomplishments, she was still seen by many as not being a "true" Cadian.[2d]

Some time later, Battle Group Tartaros (the Indomitus Crusade Battle Group the 217th was assigned to) travelled to the Carrodan System. The Battle Group were planning to take on supplies there, on the planet Attruso, only to discover that Attruso had been annexed by the T'au Empire.[2b]

By this point, Darya had been elevated to the rank of Sergeant herself.[2a] She was designated a Pathfinder[2c], and now led a team of snipers of her own, tasked with ranging ahead of the rest of the regiment.[2a]

Wargear

Darya was initially armed with a standard-issue long-las.[1c] During the fighting on Cocleratum, however, she took up Corporal Mir's long-las.[1f] She continued to use this afterwards.[2d]
