| This article is about the runes of the Aeldari language; for the the runes used by Eldar Seers, see Psychic Runes. |
The Eldar Language is highly advanced and almost impossible to understand for lesser races.[1]
Overview
The Eldar language is considered highly complex and graceful. Many references draw upon the Eldar psyche, mythical figures, and long-lost events. The Eldar also communicate with pose and gesture, it is possible for two Eldar to have full conversations without saying a word to one another.[1] Today, each Craftworld along with the Exodites speaks with its own unique dialect that is easily recognizable to other Eldar.[11a][16] Outsiders might describe the Eldar spoken language as having a musical quality to it.[31] Other near-heretical Imperial literature includes that of Inquisitor Ichtyus Drumall, Obscurus Analects of Xenoartefacts, where some insight into Aeldari culture and runes is recorded within his self-purported three years spent in the underbelly of craftworld Saim-Hann.[32]
The Imperium has struggled to understand both the spoken and written language of the Eldar. It took the cumulative life's work of Lexicos Aldus Mari and their 160 predecessors to understand even the most basic ideas behind the Eldar spoken tongue. Aldus acted as the last diplomatic envoy to Craftworld Alaitoc with their studies on their culture concluding in 453.M36.[16] Other notable Imperials who have contributed significantly to the Aeldari xeno lexicography field of study is various members of the prolific Mung Dynasty.[18][10]
Names
Aeldari personal names call into two type: titles of rank and purpose or names inherited from ancient tales.[16]
The first type of name is composed of a ceremonial name and common name. Warriors often have a third, a battle name. Using a common name at the wrong moment could result in great insult, while using a ceremonial name at the wrong time could be seen as fussy or aloof. Ceremonial names usually grow longer with age. This could be due to more rank accrued, indicators of role or purpose, accolades, or denotations of prowess or temperament.[16]
As an example, the ceremonial name Alai-Eltanomorreiasalonethatil can be broken down, meaning: Alai (of the Alaitoc craftworld), Eltano (birth name), mor (the wise), reia (rising star), salo (the teacher), nethatil (family name ending). While in common conversations they are simply called Elthil, a simple contraction of birth-name and family name.[16]
The second type of name is mostly used by warriors and is handed down generation to generation. Exarchs have the names of great warrior of myth. Just as they pass down the sacred armour of legends, they pass on that name as well, forgetting their past life.[16]
Types
Old Eldar
Old Eldar is the ancient tongue of the ancient Eldar Empire. While broadly similar to modern Aeldari, it is considered sensuous and overly indulgent. While modern Craftworld Aeldari has shored away such excess, Old Eldar is still used for ceremonial purposes by some Craftworlders.[11b]
Drukhari
The Dark Eldar speak the same core language as their Craftworld cousins. However it is considered to be a unique and distinct dialect of the Eldar language.[11c] Moreover, there are different subdialects between High Commorragh and Low Commorragh.[13] Drukhari names and dialect tend to sound harsher than their Asuryani kin.[23c]
Harlequin
Harlequins speak with a unique Aeldari dialect that is said to be mysterious, deceitful, full of references, and overly elaborate and performative.[12][14]
Alphabet
Aeldari Runes, also called Glyphs,[17] are the grapheme of their written language, used in divination or read as a cursive script[9] within the Aeldari written language. Each runic symbol is used for a concept, as opposed to a letter, and many of these word-concepts have different meanings depending on the context in which they are presented.[1] Many of the word-concepts are more than just descriptions. These word-concepts, while being pronounced the same, can have subtly different meanings when written rather than verbalised.[16] One glyph's proximity to another could also change aspects of what florid concepts are being conveyed.[17]
Aeldari runes are used in cartouche heirograms, such as those on the Wraithknight, in two ways: as circles to denote noble houses and ovals to denote Bonesinger schools.[9]
