Iyanden is an Eldar Craftworld. Once the most populated and largest of the Craftworlds, it is now on the brink of extinction after being invaded by Hive Fleet Kraken. Iyanden barely repelled the attack, losing thousands upon thousands of Eldar warriors in the process. With so few remaining, Iyanden must now rely heavily on Wraith-constructs inhabited by the spirits of their dead, such as Wraithlords and Wraithguard, to form the backbone of its armies. Hence, the people of Iyanden are often referred to as the "Ghost Warriors". Despite suffering such a significant loss, the Eldar of Iyanden are determined that their Craftworld will shine brightly once again.[1b]

History
After the Fall
Following the Fall of the Eldar, those Eldar remaining on Iyanden immediately felt Slaanesh thirsting for their souls, and the Craftworld's Seer Council immediately ordered the recovery of Waystones from Crone Worlds – a feat accomplished by Mehlendri Silversoul who recovered Iyanden's first Waystones from Falladon[6f] in M33[6a] – as well as the construction of an Infinity Circuit, a masterwork by Bonesinger Invaril Brightshard, for which Silversoul sacrificed herself to activate,[6f] thus restricting the Dark Prince's ability to claim their souls upon death. With their small victory in hand, Iyanden began a loftier goal of rebuilding a new realm that would one day rule the Galaxy as the old Eldar Empire had once done. Emissaries were sent through the webway to other craftworlds, sharing the discoveries of spirit stones and the infinity circuit. This knowledge was gladly received, but as for alliances, not all craftworlds shared Iyanden's grandiose goals and priorities.[6c]
Alliance with Biel-Tan
However, many Craftworlds such as Alaitoc and Ulthwé took other missions and would spare no resources for this quest, but Biel-tan proved willing to join Iyanden and the two Craftworlds became inseparable allies for many years with the common goal of not only rebuilding Eldar civilization but also defeating Chaos. Together, Iyanden and Biel-Tan scored many victories against the forces of Chaos. While Biel-Tan purged the western arm of the galaxy, Iyanden drove the forces of Chaos from the eastern rim, defending many Exodite and Maiden Worlds that they hoped would one day form the heart of their new empire. The lack of mighty Chaos strongholds on the eastern rim is a direct result of their efforts. In time, the distant Exodite Worlds of the Ybaric Cluster joined Iyanden's cause, bringing with them long lost knowledge and many thousands of Dragon Knights.[6c]
The Farseers of Iyanden focused entirely on predicting the machinations of Chaos, blinding them to much else that occurred within the galaxy. However, when it became clear that Biel-Tan fought not to defeat Chaos but to bring to heel all those who they deem as in the way of Eldar ascension, tensions between the two Craftworlds flared. Iyanden did share Biel-Tan's hatred of squatting primitives, whom Iyanden rather pitied for their shortcomings, nor did the craftworld have the resources to recolonise these worlds once the aliens were eradicated.[6c] This alliance would fade in 777.M34 after Biel-Tan initiates bloody war in which to retake the Maiden World of Rasilena which the seers of Iyanden deem unimportant in the war against Chaos.[6f] Iyanden lost yet another ally when the Ybaric Cluster Exodites became isolated by a Warp Storm, and attempts to investigate their fate by Iyanden resulted in none of the scouts returning.[6c] While the alliance was never officially dissolved, joint operations between the Iyanden and Biel-Tan became rarer and rarer until one day communications ceased altogether.
Cleansing of Menimshemash
Alone, Iyanden would rely on its Ghost Warriors to cleanse the Tzeentch-infested World Spirit of Menimshemash in 867.M35 as Wraithguard protect Iyanden's seers, but it is the souls of the dead Exodites themselves who would buy time waylaying the Daemons. In the aftermath of what would become known as the Cleansing of Menimshemash the spirits of the World Spirit would join Iyanden's infinity circuit.[6f]
War With Zhemon
Now alone, Iyanden's accomplishments began to dwindle and it became clear they had underestimated just how ingrained Chaos had become in younger races like Humanity. Iyanden soon came into battle with Zhemon, a Fallen Angel Space Marine who was spreading an empire of anarchy across the galaxy in an act of vengeance against his former Imperial masters. Faced with Zhemon's significant forces and their own dwindling numbers, it was here that Iyanden first used Spiritseers to call upon the souls of deceased Eldar to pilot Wraith-constructs. Despite these reinforcements, victory was still uncertain for the Eldar despite how many Chaos-tainted worlds they purged, they had underestimated how widespread Zhemon's own followers had become. Fortunately, the Imperium itself eventually became involved, and Iyanden indirectly aided the humans by attacking his power base on pivotal worlds, weakening his own defenses in the face of eventual Imperial assault.[6c]
By 478.M37, Zhemon was finally cornered by Iyanden on the world of Ishasta and this was the only time in the entire campaign that the Eldar fought directly at the side of the Imperium when their forces fought alongside the Dark Angels who were determined to capture their fallen brother. A joint attack by Iyanden's wraith constructs and the Ravenwing cornered Zhemon, his bodyguards, and his pack of Maulerfiends. Battle finally ended when Zhemon was taken prisoner by the Dark Angels. Iyanden agreed to let the Imperials have their prize, for they foresaw that the Fallen Angel would suffer far more in the hands of Dark Angels than their own.[1] Swayed by the Iyanden success against Zhemon, two lesser Craftworlds (Malan'tai and Idharae) joined their cause. Together, the three Craftworlds greatly curbed the activity of Chaos on the Eastern Fringe.[6c]
T'au Conflict for Lilarsus
Through the machinations of the Dark Eldar Archon Andross Klax, the T'au are manipulated to destroy the Maiden World of Lilarsus in 876.M39 and in reprisal Iyanden destroys the Ke'lshan sept colony of Ka'mais. The two forces clashed for several weeks before the Dark Eldar's involvement is uncovered. The T'au Earth Caste scientists were fascinated by the Wraithguard wreckage they were able to briefly investigate, clumsily comparing it to their own battlesuits. In the subsequent counter-attacks Iyanden recovered their wraithbone constructs from the tenacious and well organised T'au before they could investigate the Aeldari tech further. After many weeks of fighting, both sides discovered the Drukhari's instigation and Iyanden withdrew from the conflict. The T'au extended a hand of friendship, hoping to learn the advanced technology of their recent foes, but the Council of Iyanden coldly ignored the primitive's diplomatic offers and proceeded to pursue vengeance against Andross Klax on their own.[6a][6f]
Iyanden would in time fight jointly with the T'au of the Sept World Vior'la to stop the predations of the Novokh Necron Dynasty in what would become known as the Battle of Twilight's Ending, only to turn on the T'au when Farseers revealed the survival of the T'au sept posed a far greater threat to Iyanden.[22]
Crimson Fists' Intervention on Thule
In 978.M39, Farseers of Craftworld Iyanden demanded the High King of Thule evacuate the planet before their forces arrived in a month's time. When the Warhost arrived, an intervention force of Crimson Fists routed the Aeldari forces forcing a retreat.[16]
Conflict over Hypnoth
In 585.M40 an Iyanden vessel, the Blood of Khaine is taken by the Imperial Fists 2nd Company and flown to the Forge World of Hypnoth. Admiral Draech of Iyanden leads a counter-attack, destroying the Blood of Khaine and two additional Imperial Fist Strike Cruisers still in orbit as retribution.[6f]
Hive Fleet Naga
Eventually it was not the forces of Chaos that threatened the Craftworlds the most, but that of the Tyranid Hive Fleet Naga. From 810-812.M41, Iyanden helped to eliminate one of the two main tendrils of Hive Fleet Naga.[2a] As the Tyranids were besieging Iyanden's old Exodite comrades in the Ybaric Cluster, Iyanden, Malan'tai, and Idharae struck to defend their allies and many Maiden Worlds.[6c] This conflict is also known as the Fury of Shai'naid.[6a]
On the Exodite World of Halathel, defenders fiercely held their World Spirit shrine from a Tyranid siege. A fresh fleet from Iyanden commanded by Admiral Draech arrived to aid the Exodites and engaged the Hive Ships orbiting the planet. Draech's flagship, the Auspicious Illumination of Eternity was destroyed early in the battle. Command of the fleet was quickly seized by his second-in-command, a young Prince Yriel, who successfully led the Iyanden fleet to victory. However, on the planet the shrine was overrun. In less than an hour the Eldar defenders were massacred and the World Spirit destroyed. Yriel, overwhelmed by rage, gave the order to scour all life from Halathel.[2a]
Despite their victory, eventually Malan'tai was destroyed by the abomination known as the Doom of Malan'tai. However, Iyanden emerged from the conflict relatively unscathed, and in their arrogance did not believe the warnings of Idharae Chief Farseer Taolis Eversong that the Tyranids encountered thus far were merely the harbingers of a larger swarm. Thus it was that Idharae ended their alliance with Iyanden after their warning had fallen on deaf ears. Not all of Iyanden's seers were oblivious to the threat; Kelmon Firesight, leader of Iyanden's Seer Council, had become concerned by the Tyranid menace and supported Prince Yriel during his campaign against Argan Kallorax. Kelmon never told anyone why he supported the rise of Yriel, simply that he foresaw the Prince would be pivotal to the Craftworld's future.[6c]
Crimson Fists' Intervention on Hellabore
Iyanden forces slaughter the planetary council of Hellabore in 867.M41 before Chaos takes it's root. Unaware of the Heresy prevented, the Crimson Fists attack in retribution. A small contingent of Wraith Constructs lead by Wraithlord Toralven Gravesong hold the Space Marines at bay while the living Eldar escape, sacrificing themselves.[6f]
Ultramarine Defense of Orar's Sepulchre
Iyanden forces in 888.M41[6f] joined Craftworld Biel-Tan in an attempt to take the Sceptre of Galaxian, a mythic artifact of the Ultramarines on Commrath. Marneus Calgar would fortify the planet for siege leading to an Eldar defeat.[19]
The Perfect War
Upon the planet of Yurk in 891.M41, armies of the Ork Warlord Killfist are engaged without loss by Iyanden's Grav-Tanks, preventing the Yurkoid Waaagh! Killfist altogether and saving an endangered Eldar colony.[20]
War with Kallorax
In 933.M41[6f] the Chaos pirate horde of Argan Kallorax, raiding out of the Eye of Terror,[18a] threatened Iyanden in what would be a nine-year long campaign. Prince Yriel lead the fleet in 941.M41 to a major victory destroying the flagship Deathless Reaver[6f] and was considered one of the Eldar's greatest tacticians.
In an event that would be known as the Battle of the Burning Moon then High Admiral Yriel, not imune to pride[18a] and learning of the pirate's intent to strike at Iyanden directly,[6f] lead the fleet on a pre-emptive strike[18a] against Kallorax's new flagship[6f] in 942.M41 deploying the full force of Iyanden against Kallorax[6c] storming the flagship and slaying the pirate lord in single combat.[6f]
However, in his desire to throw everything he had at his enemy, Yriel foolishly stripped Iyanden of all of its defense ships,[6c] leaving the Craftworld virtually defenseless when a Chaos Cruiser – a part of a suicide attack by a small flotilla of Kallorax's defeated fleet[18a] – launched 36 Cyclonic Torpedoes at Iyanden as a final act of defiance[6c]. Though Iyanden's point defense lasers intercepted 35 of the Torpedoes, one still struck and killed tens of thousands of Eldar along with their Spirit Stones, dooming them to the torments of Slaanesh. In a grim portent, the torpedo had struck the Shrine of Asuryan and extinguished the Fire of Creation.[6c]
Yriel's Exile
In the aftermath of the disaster, an embattled Yriel expecting to be feted and honoured for his victory against the Chaos fleet was deeply angered when instead he was called by the Council of Iyanden[6f] to defend his course of action.[18a] Claiming that his record should speak for itself and refusing to enter debate or justify himself, Farseer Kelmon saw no course of action but to strip Yriel of his rank as High Admiral,[18a] giving the position instead to Ethrael[6c]. Bitter with rage, Yriel vowed to never step foot on Iyanden again and with a small band of followers[18a] left Iyanden[6c] and vanished into exile[6f] where he would form the Eldritch Raiders the single most powerful Corsair force in the galaxy.[18a]
The Time of Ending
In 991.M41 respected Ulthwe Farseer Kysaduras the Anchorite[6f] proclaims the End Times have begun and preaches that the only hope of the Eldar's survival lies in Ynnead.[20] Shortly after Eldrad Ulthran arrives in Iyanden with another message, a dire warning of hungry darkness from the east that yearned for Eldar flesh as Slaanesh did for their souls, and implored the Craftworld to turn westward. Unwilling to abandon territory they had worked so hard to cleanse of Chaos, and buffeted from it's survival against Hive Fleet Naga, the Council of Iyanden viewed Ulthran with only distrust and ignored his request.[6c]
The Doom of Iyanden Hive Fleet Kraken
In 992.M41,[4] Iyanden would suffer its greatest tragedy at the claws of Hive Fleet Kraken. Forewarned by scouts of the approaching hive fleet, Farseer Kelmon called together every Eldar on Iyanden to debate a course of action, whether to isolate to hide from the Tyranids or to face their enemy head on. It would be an eyewitness account by scout Irilith which would sway Kelmon and the craftworld such that all elements of Iyanden's fleet would be recalled and every eldar would prepare for battle as Guardian, Aspect Warrior or Warlock, help would be requested from all other Craftworlds, and the Avatar of Khaine would be awoken. Most terribly, the ancient spirit stones of Iyanden's Infinity Circuit would be taken from their resting place to serve as Ghost Warriors risking the destruction of Iyanden's culture for it's defense.[18a]
Iyanden would buffet itself against waves of Hive Fleet Kraken, losing its fleet and ceding much of the craftworld before the surprising return of Yriel and his Eldritch Raiders, who deftly severed the Hive Fleet's tendrils and three additional waves before disembarking to join the craftworld's defense.[18a] In time, Harlequins, Dire Avengers of Biel-tan, Wild Riders of Saim-Hann, Rangers of Alaitoc, the Ulthwe Black Guard, and even Exodite Eldar Knights would come to aid.[18a] In the end Iyanden was victorious as Prince Yriel takes up the Spear of Twilight, but only narrowly. The Iyanden Council's leader, Kelmon Firesight, was and Taec Silvereye now lead the council asking Yriel's forgiveness and for him to once again serve as High Admiral and asking Wraithlords to serve beside them on the new Council.[6c] After the conflict, Iyanden stood in ruins and four-fifths of its inhabitants were dead or dying[2b] many of Iyanden's halls lost forever to the dead.[6f]
Novmarines from the Warp
Mere months after their battle with Hive Fleet Kraken in 087993.M41, a Battle Barge of Novamarines emerges from the warp within a light year of Iyanden. The craftworld in desperate need of repair, Yriel dispatches Ghost Warriors of the Ghost House of Ulthanash to board and destroy the ship.[6f]
Battle for Teleth-ai
The Council of Iyanden seeks aid from the Exodite World of Teleth-ai to restore the Craftworld to functionality, for the first time since the battle with Hive Fleet Kraken restoring the largest Webway gate. While repairs are underway Teleth-ai is beset by Cadian Imperial Guardsmen on 778993.M41. Knowing they did not have the forces to take a more ethical approach, Iyanden's Autarchs unleashed Hemlock Wraithfighters. With no defense against the soul-severing munitions the Imperial forces were routed into waiting Exodite Dragon Knights and defeated.[6f]
Rites of War
Iyanden scouts rediscovered the Maiden World of Davinuus, whose records had been lost during the Fall of the Eldar. The planet itself was a repository of ancient treasures – now a colony world of the Human Imperium. Realising they would be unable to reclaim the world on their own, the Craftworld instead opted to send small landing parties to recover the world's artefacts and return them to the craftworld,[24] unintentionally but inevitably drawing the ire of the Humans on the planet and in so doing revealing the Genestealer Cult which had overthrown the Planetary Governor and discovering a Tyranid infestation which endangered the planet.[24] Iyanden formed a temporary alliance with the Imperial forces, and awoke the Avatar of Khaine which slew the Hive Tyrant, sparing the planet from a Hive Fleet invasion.[24]
Waaagh! Rekkfist
In 995.M41, another invasion of Iyanden, this time by Waaagh! Rekkfist, was imminent and so Iyanden preemptively engaged the Orks on Antellas Prime. Early battles successfully crippled the Waaagh!, but soon the Orks counter-attacked in force and managed to land on the Craftworld. Iyanden was forced to awaken even more Wraith-constructs in order to hold back the invasion.
As events became desperate, a Webway portal at the rear of the Craftworld activated and Dark Eldar from the Kabal of the Wraithkind and the Cult of the Flayed Hand emerged to aid in slaying the Orks. After Iyanden was saved, the Council of Seers questioned the Dark Eldar as to why they intervened, and they replied simply that they gain extreme entertainment from watching Iyanden's angst-ridden use of necromancy.[3]
The Tyrannid Bio-Purge
In 997.M41, word reaches Iyanden of Hive Fleet Leviathan. Though not directly threatened, the craftworld sends emmisaries to other craftworlds, sharing their hard-won experience to best defend against the Tyrannids.[6f]
On 778999.M41[6f] Iyanden would get it's chance to engage head on with Hive Fleet Leviathan as a remnant of Hive Fleet Kraken thought lost to a Warp Storm emerged and attempted to fuse with the new hive fleet on the Imperium-controlled[21] Maiden World of Valedor.[3] Harlequins broker an alliance between Craftworlds Iyanden and Biel-tan, as well as Dark Eldar of Commoragh.[21] Through the activation of an arcane Drukhari device known as the Fireheart destroying Valedor and all Tyrannids upon[6f] it but losing Taec Silvereye and Ghost House House Illumenwe in the process.[6c]
Encoraged by the success of the Fireheart on Valedor, Iyanden and the Eldar of Biel-Tan once again formed an alliance – this time against the threat of the Tyrannids. Countless worlds, many of them inhabited and some by peacable civilizations, are scoured clean of bio-mass in a campaign to starve Hive Fleet Leviathan.[6f]
Destruction of Verdox II
Alerted by the scale of destruction and its effects, including the displacement of Orks, Space Marines converge on the vanguard systems of Hive Fleet Leviathan on 811999.M41. The Invaders and Crimson Castellans chapters assail Iyanden forces in the Verdox System, including soon-to-be Tyrannid-infested Agri-World of Verdox II. Autarch Sunspear of Iyanden maneuvers the Space Marines into conflict with the Tyranids themselves, giving just enough time to escape into the Webway warning the marines as a courtesy before the atomic fire of the Fireheart consumes the world.[6f]
A Clash of Fates
In 827999.M41, the Farseers of Iyanden become aware of two possible futures in which their Craftworld is destroyed. The first is at the hands of the Daemon Prince M'kar the Reborn, the second by the Ultramarines. Thus do the Eldar begin a series of campaigns designed to bring these two enemies into direct conflict, sparing Iyanden from destruction. Through a series of hit and run engagements, M'kar's daemonic forces are lured ever closer to Ultramar and when the Daemon Prince is about to descend on the Ultramar world of Talassar, the Eldar withdraw and let M'kar's hatred of the Ultramarines do the rest.[6a]
Awakening of Ynnead
In 998999.M41 Spiritseer Iyanna Arienal becomes the pre-eminent voice on Iyanden, with the allegiance of almost all Wraith Constructs, prepares to cast the souls of Iyanden back into the infinity circuit and recover the Tears of Morai-Heg to hasten the awakening of Ynnead.[6f] Standing alone in the shrine of Asuryan, the Fire of Creation flickers back to life.[6c]
Forseeing Yvraine's need, Iyanna and a volunteer army of Iyanden's Ghost Warriors, including the Wraithknight The Soulseeker, who would intervene on Belial IV to get the Ynnari off the Crone World escaping to safety through the Viadh Wayport a secret path through the webway to the Ghost Halls of the Craftworld itself and into the hospitable custody of the Council of Iyanden.[7]
Thirteenth Black Crusade
As Yvraine arrived Nurgle-infested space hulks assailed Iyanden, led by the Daemon Prince Gara'gugul'gor. Yvraine and her Ynnari were kept from combat by the Council of Iyanden, but she was nonetheless able to call forth her Corsair allies to assist the craftworld. Yriel directed the craftworld into ramming position with the Gara'gugul'gor's flagship the Spawn of Oghanothir. Once onboard he and his corsairs fought to the heart of the juggernaut, where he plunged the Spear of Twilight into the enginarium before being felled by an errant steel girder.[7]
Gara'gugul'gor, seeing in Yriel an opportunity to shake up the Great Game attached Yriel's corpse to his spear with a milky resin, filled it with plague spores, and left him in the void of space for Hemlock Wraithfighters to find. The craftworld saved, but in mourning, it seemed the prince had finally met his fated end. The Prince's corpse was placed in quarantine with Wraithguard attendants and sterilised of Nurgle's plagues. Yvraine suddenly entered the chamber and drove the Spear of Twilight through Yriel's body revealing it to have been one of the lost Crone Swords, and with her power over the object was able to return to Yriel much of the life-force it had drained. Yriel's death undone and doom at the hands of the Spear delayed, Yvraine continued her quest for the final Crone Sword.[7]
Noctis Aeterna
Shortly after Iyanden's first Daemonic invasion, a celestial event known as the Noctis Aeterna erupted across the Galaxy following the formation of the Great Rift. Taking advantage of the situation, the Keeper of Secrets N'Kisha channeled a Warp Storm to break through the craftworld’s formidable protections. Once more, fighting took place beneath the domes and among the splendours of that majestic craftworld. Were it not for the sudden appearance of warhosts from all the Eldar factions – Craftworlds, Dark Eldar, Corsairs, Harlequins, Exodites and Ynnari – then Iyanden would have been lost.[8]
Psychic Awakening
Following the narrow survival of Iyanden and the teachings of Yvraine, debate raged among Iyanden's Seer Council as to what course of action should be done. Farseer Iyanna Arienal had her own hypothesis, crossing the entire Craftworld's population into death in order to escape the depredations of Slaanesh and empower the birth of Ynnead to destroy Chaos God. Not only that, Arienal proposed having the entire Craftworld Eldar race convert itself into Ghost Warriors. Arienal argued that once the threat of Slaanesh had passed, the Dark Eldar's Haemonculi could be used to regrow their physical bodies and reverse the process.
However the danger was great, for should Iyanden fall Slaanesh would have a feast of Eldar souls like none save The Fall itself. Thus Iyanden's Seer Council debated a course of action as they neared towards Iathglas, a site of a grand confluence of fate.[9] The council and Iyanna Arienal ultimately decided to follow Ynnead's Prophet, despite objections from Yriel and his Eldritch Raiders that the extremism of the Ynnari had not lead to lasting benefits for Iyanden.[25]
Renewed Threats
Recently, the Tyranids have again begun to encroach upon Iyanden. To combat this threat, they have deployed their Spirit Hosts of Wraith Constructs to the Bastior Sub-Sector to slow the progress of the Tyranid invasion.[17]
Rune Symbol
The symbol of Iyanden is a reference to the ever-burning shrine of Asuryan to signify a flame of hope that Iyanden will one day recover.[1b]
The Shrine of Asuryan itself sits at the heart of Iyanden[18a] in the center of it's chamber, atop a perfect diamond pyramid, burns the Fire of Creation. Said to be the last splinter of power of the Eldar Mythic Hero Asuryan, legend tells that should the fire ever go out doom would befall the craftworld. Understanding the nuance of their legends, some Eldar see the fire of the shrine as a reflection of the flame they kindle within their own souls, a reminder that although their Eldar Gods were consumed by Slaanesh during The Fall, they were still touched by greatness.[6c]
