2nd Company, Ultramarines Chapter
The 2nd Company of the Ultramarines, known as the Guardians of the Temple or the Avengers of Ultramar,[8] has cultivated a reputation as dynamic heroes.[1]

Overview
These warriors are revered as the foremost Battle Company warriors and uphold the finest traditions of their chapter, serving as a shining example to the rest of the Chapter. They are also the most likely warriors to be elevated to Space Marine Veteran. The Ultramarines 2nd Company is renowned for heroics that border on reckless, something which has earned censure from Marneus Calgar on multiple occasions. The warriors of the 2nd Company storm into the fray with the speed of a lightning strike; they formulate battle plans so risky and demanding that few other warriors would even countenance putting them into practice. They rely upon the element of surprise and their overwhelming post-human strength to utterly crush enemy resistance and seize victory for Ultramar, often before their enemies even realize that the battle has begun. Yet the 2nd Company are anything but foolhardy. They fight in this fashion only because they know that they possess the discipline, will and martial skill to prevail. Because of their achievements, they were given the honour of guarding the Shrine of the Primarch prior to Guilliman's return.[1]
History
First Tyrannic War
During the late 41st Millennium, the Ultramarines 2nd Company is often called to defend the Imperium outside the realms of Ultramar. Thus they were far from home when Hive Fleet Behemoth appeared on the Eastern Fringes and the First Tyrannic War ensued. By the time the few weak astropathic messages reached the 2nd company made their way to Ultramar's defense, the Battle for Macragge was over. The 2nd company comprised elements of the reinforcing waves that scoured the worlds of lingering enemies.[27]
With the veteran Ultramarines First Company wiped out during the First Tyrannic War replacements from other companies would rebuild the veteran first. The then Commander of the Second Company, Severus Agemman, would replace the fallen Saul Invictus as First Company Captain. Lucian Trajan, Agemman's senior sergeant, would be promoted to Captain of the Second Company. Sergeant Demetrian Titus would serve in Trajan's Command Squad and served in many purge operations to cleanse Ultramar's worlds of the Tyranids, leading multiple kill teams from the front. Trajan and Titus would serve together for over a century, under the tutelage of Captain Agemman.[27]
Beta Arcturus
The Ultramarines Second Company would eventually be tasked with responding to an Aeldari invasion of the Civilised World known to the Imperium as Beta Arcturus. A warhost of Craftworld Biel-Tan claimed the world once belonging to the Aeldari Empire, giving the inhabitants a single local day (nine hours) to evacuate. The Ultramarines Second Company would arrive nine days after the inhabitants astropathic call for aid was received, too late to aid the Imperial citizens. Captain Trajan met blade to blade with the commanding Autarch in single combat and slew her. During this duel, Sergeant Titus led Trajan's Command Squad against the elite Aspect Warrior bodyguards of their general. In spite, the xenos would capture the young Battle-Brother Leandros as they retreated. This was a trap. As Trajan led a combat squad to retrieve him, Titus was ordered to secure the battlefield and await their return. Tajan was cut down by hidden forces, and Titus assumed command of the strike force, going on to retrieve Trajan's body and drive the invading Eldar from Beta-Arcturus.[27]
Captain Titus
Titus' interim captaincy was made permanent by Chapter Master Marneus Calgar upon the 2nd Company's return to Macragge to inter Trajan's body within the Fortress of Hera. Titus would lead many victorious engagements against the alien, mutant, and traitor, but remain humble. Agemman and Manneus would consider him an exemplar Ultramarine ideals, as well as a master strategist and fighter.[27]
Ten years into Titus' captaincy of the Second Company, Forge World Graia would be invaded by the Orks of Waaagh! Grimskull, and the events of the Grimskull War would ensue. After Titus displayed an uncommon resistance to corruptive warp powers unleashed on Graia, Titus would be taken for interrogation by Inquisitor Thrax. The proud Cato Sicarius, feeling overlooked for captaincy since the First Tyrannic War, would replace Titus as Captain of the Second Company.[27]
Fourth Tyrannic War
The legendary Cato Sicarius would eventually be lost in the Warp for many years and was replaced by then Captain Acheran. Sicarius eventually returned towards the end of the Indomitus Crusade, though he was inducted into the Victrix Guard.[2] Sometime later, Acheran himself would be replaced by Demetrian Titus after his death on Trygg. Titus was then re-promoted from Space Marine Lieutenant to his former rank of Space Marine Captain once again.[25][26]

Company Banner
The banner of the 2nd is a great source of inspiration to members of the company when borne aloft. Key features of the banner include the Aquila Maximus, the Ultima, a Victory Laurel, and a star representing Terra and the Emperor. Additionally, the banner contains an honour scroll of the company's most notable actions, including combat in the Damocles Gulf and in defence of Ultramar.[1]
Many warriors have had the honour of bearing the standard, in its many forms, throughout history, including Ancient Maxim Calaginos.[1]
