Praetor was one of the highest military ranks a Space Marine could reach during the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy era in the Legiones Astartes.[1b]

Overview

Praetors were commanders second only to their Primarchs in skill, battle prowess, and intellect in their respective Legions.[1b]

The highest rank a Praetor could attain was that of a Lord Commanders[1b] of a legion Chapter, putting them in a position of power second only to a Primarch.[1a] Depending on their Legion's culture, this title could also be First Captain, Chapter Master, Lord Commander, Khan, Tribune.[1b]

As Masters of the Legion, their tactical acumen allowed them to lead the forces at their disposal through varied formations and tactics, ranging from sheer brute force, armoured assault waves, murderous siege-craft or overwhelming and relentless attack from close orbit.[1b]

Many commanders went to war with a dedicated cadre of bodyguards in the form of Legion Command Squads, guardians who protected their master in the heat of battle, as well as skilled warriors who pressed attack at the most crucial moment.[2b]

Praetors were clad in Artificer Armour as befitted their status, and had access to the best gear available to the Legions, such as Master-crafted weapons, and Terminator Armour.[1b]
