The Saturnine Dreadnought is a Dreadnought pattern that was created from the technology of the secretive tech-enclaves of Saturn.[1]

Overview

Salamanders Saturnine Dreadnought[1]

The Saturnine Dreadnought not only towered over even the Leviathan Dreadnought, but was also equipped with stronger Thermal Diffraction Fields,[2] more powerful generators, thicker armour, and a more durable warframe. The Saturnine's pauldrons held Teleportation Synchronisers as well[1], and its heavy weaponry made it a walking engine of destruction.[1] It was said that only Legionary of exceptional willpower, focus, and discipline could successfully pilot a Saturnine Dreadnought suit. There were also rumours that the pilot required some level of psychic talent in order to access the armour's full capabilities.[3]

For weaponry, the Saturnine Dreadnought had two known configurations. The Chiron Configuration consisted of a Heavy Plasma Bombard and twin-linked Disintegration Cannons on its arm mounts and two torso-mounted Photonic Incinerators for point-defense. The second known configuration was dubbed Ophion and consisted of a Inversion Beamer and Graviton Pulveriser on its arm mounts and two torso-mounted Heavy Particle Shredders for point-defense. Its torso could also mount twin Concussive Resonators.[4]

History

The original template for the Saturnine Dreadnought was developed during the Age of Strife on Saturn's moon of Phoebe from a banished Mechanicum Tech-Cabal. Derived from Dark Age technology, this same enclave had developed the Saturnine Pattern Terminator Armour, which after the Phoebian Accord with the Emperor were used by the Legiones Astartes during the Great Crusade.[8a] However unlike Saturnine Terminator Armour, the Saturnine Dreadnought template was too technically complex to be produced by Phoebe beyond the prototype stage. This changed when the Salamanders Primarch Vulkan revived the design, and was able to figure out how to get it into mass production.[8b]

Vulkan shared his knowledge with the other Space Marine Legions and thanks to his efforts, Saturnine Dreadnoughts began to see a wider usage. However because of this, the Traitor Legions had access to the technology when the Horus Heresy began.[1]
