Pyre Wardens
The Pyre Wardens were an artificer sub-sect of the Salamanders Legion's Forge, who were charged with the development and trial of novel wargear during their campaigns.[1]
History
They were divided into independent cadres and not only refined their own inventions, but also those of their Primarch, Vulkan. The Pyre Wardens are credited with creating a number of wargear patterns that were then fielded by the other Space Marine Legions as well. Some of their inventions, however, were only used by the Salamanders themselves. This includes the elite Firedrake's Dragonscale Storm Shields. Several cadres were also credited with providing vital aid in their Primarch's efforts to revive the out-favored Saturnine Terminator Armour and they were equipped with a number of prototypes and variant Saturnine armours.[1]
During the onset of the Horus Heresy, Vulkan recalled many of the Pyre Wardens cadres as the Salamanders made ready to attack Isstvan V. Only the closest Wardens were able to answer to their Primarch's muster, but not all of them were deployed, when the Traitor Legions began the Dropsite Massacre. As it unfolded, Vulkan ordered the undeployed Saturnine Pyre Wardens to escape, before the Traitors could claim their armour.[1]
